I believe the tracking community is made from only Galaxy devices (at least in the beginning). And those devices DO need to opt-in to the SmartThings app for it to be able to ping devices. Personally speaking, I've had three SmartTags since the beginning of the year. My office is approximately 30 miles from my home. And sometimes I leave my purse or laptop bag at work. Even though the trackers are out of MY range, their locations are frequently updated.
Overall I'm pretty pleased with the SmartTags and am glad I switch! When I saw it on sale for 50% off (which I believe is the cheapest I've ever seen them)... I knew I couldn't pass up purchasing another tag for my luggage!
