An alternative is an Android tablet running an app like Touch Portal or Unified Remote. If you have an old tablet lying around you're not using much this is an alternative to do the same thing.
I use Touch Portal and it works very good plus I can use the same tablet for other things.
Touch Portal will do anything Stream Deck will do plus it doesn't have the limitations of the hardware keys - you can set up as many buttons in Touch Portal as you can fit on the screen. On my 10" tablet I have Touch Portal set up with an 8 wide x 7 grid of keys (1" x 5/8" sized keys) = 48 keys. And you can make as many different screens with different key configurations as you like. That capability alone makes it better than the Stream Deck.
Regardless of the marketing the Stream Deck's "tactile feedback" isn't important as you're not touch typing on a vertically angled device on a stand.

I have everything from HTML and jQuery templates to hex codes for our branded colors to canned social media response programed into mine.

The stream deck has a big library of built in plugins that do a ton of useful stuff. You can also tie a stream deck into DisplayFusion's multi monitor application using hotkeys tied to the stream deck. In a multi monitor desktop array of 4k screens this is invaluable. Displayfusion has a robust library of window management scripts and user provided ones that you can use or you can take those as a referece and do minor edits or cobble together a new function combining aspects of others if you want to go that deep. It's really not hard to do. Even merely hotkeying one or more saved window position profiles to the streamdeck in itself is super handy. That and application launching + "home" window positions for apps with a single press, etc.
Setting up toggle key (built in steam-deck or displayfusion hotkey'd) functions that also change the buton's graphic e.g. mute/unmute, play/pause among other things that benefit from the state of the button graphic's feedback is great. You can set up multi-press functions of 3 or more states in a loop too, or have one function activate other functions, other dependancies, etc.
I have the 15 button version. I use it heavily for window management (I never have to drag or resize windows anymore) and app launching/min/restore/home position but also for opening windows system panels, taking screenshots, focusing on audio apps and play/pause/next.
I was really hoping that the bigger 32-key XL one would go on sale similarly but I haven't seen that on sale as of yet

Also, I am prepared to receive the replies "If you don't know what this is for, you probably don't need it "

I integrate it with displayfusion multi monitor / window management app via hotkeys for a lot of useful functions.

There is also a growing library of useful streamdeck plugins you use directly in the streamdeck app:

The big draw is tactile hardware buttons with cutomizable graphics that can change when you for example toggle which sound device you are using on a multi-press... mute/unmute mic, etc but there are a ton of window management and other things you can do with it. I use it to launch and place every app in my 3 monitor setup, restore everything to a saved window position profile, etc. I use it to launch (and place) practically everything now. I have button icons to place the active window to any of a number of set locations and screen-ratios on my 3 screens on the fly. I never have to drag or resize windows ever. I also launch steam big picture or back to desktop version with a toggle button, terminate and re-launch steam button, launch other game stores/libraries. Pop apps or windows system panels up and minimize/restore toggle-cycle them, etc. etc. There is a ton you can trigger with these buttons and the elgato streamdeck library has a lot of stuff already. They are also useful as the toolbox for things like photoshop or gimp or other graphics/video editors, streaming apps, etc etc. There are a lot of app intergration plugins already on the plugin site I linked.
