USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 all mean 5 Gbps (~625 MB/s). Kind of a moot point since the mechanical disks themselves top out at ~125 MB/s (1 Gbps).

Easystore, Elements, Black and Passport portables all use the same underlying 2.5" SMR drives. Difference is mostly chassis and features.

Elements: absolute basic drives, pre-formatted NTFS iirc, Easystore is just the Best Buy branded version

Passport: has hardware encryption and password protection, pre-formatted NTFS

Passport Ultra: same as Passport but with USB-C connector instead of microUSB

WD_BLACK: basic drive in nice metal chassis, pre-formatted exFAT

I prefer the WD_BLACK line since those have better heat dissipation.

As for reliability, all drives can fail at any time. I've got a couple boxes of dead WD, Seagate, Hitachi and Toshiba at my office so I don't have any brand loyalty whatsoever. If data is important, you should have a backup (3-2-1 rule).

These are the major differences

1. The size of the casing for this drive is smaller. 2. It does not have rubber stomps on the bottom to keep it from sliding. 3. The operation light is smaller. Other than that, it's the same: USB3 and NTSF.

Have to say I always had good experiences w/ WD but this past year had TWO easystores fail on me. Lost A LOT of pictures but not worth the several hundred dollars to try & recover the data (yea, tried all the typical maneuvers). BB has the 5tb easystores for $89. Any chance these are better quality/more reliable?!?!?

Used Seagate on the past but more than 50% failed after a few years. That's when I start backing up data. After years of WD, 1 failure. Never go back to Seagate again, personal experience though.

In 2018 I purchased six WD 4TB My Passport drives for me and my brother, who is a photographer. Three of those drives failed within a year. Same story in each case: one day the drive would start to be finicky (would only work with a certain computer or if the cable was in a certain position). Then a few weeks later, the drive was gone.

Getting a new cable helped extend the life of one of the drives, but it ultimately failed as well.

I've had a great experience with other WD drives, but My Passport have been a nightmare. Maybe I was unlucky, but a 50% failure rate is unacceptable to me.

The black drives seems to have better heat dissipation due to metal outside and seems to be better for continuous use .. Also it indicates USB 3.1 instead of USB 3 in this deal.
