It really is a puzzle game in an RPG skin. This is readily obvious when playing at higher character class levels and higher scenario difficulty levels. If you play to your perception of your character instead of playing to the class' mechanics the game won't be fun (and you will be liable to misinterpret the rules as several are counterintuitive to RPG players).
Gloomhaven is a huge game (also hugely in need of a storage solution). It is filled with fiddly bits and the mechanics, for the large part, are a novel and refreshing experience. It does have some roughness (some classes are not as polished, the narrative is rather lacking, many of the item cards are just not worth choosing (while some should just be stapled to every class). It is also a huge time investment -- expect it to take over a year to complete if you only play once a week.
That said, it really is a good game and worth the money even at the normal Amazon price and a no-brainer at this price. HOWEVER HOWEVER HOWEVER, it is a game for a stable gaming group that is willing to dedicate the time to finish at least the main storyline (the side scenarios are often better mechanically than the main scenarios BTW). If you don't have the time or a stable gaming group, Jaws of the Lion (though simpler) is the product to invest in.
Gloomhaven can be played solo (you just control at least 2 characters).
I got a lot of play out of it and would have gotten a lot more, but everyone else in my group got their own copy and played it to death with other groups :p
Narratively, and thematically, it is a fantasy game (some fantasy science thrown in).
Here is the rule book

5% back with Amazon prime CC brings it close to $80.
I've heard good things but I haven't actually played the game and at $80 I'm still hesitant to pull the trigger.
I disagree it was pretty tedious to keep track of everything playing 2 characters (solo play through).
Gloomhaven 1.0 online is enjoyable solo because you don't have to keep track of so much. But kind of apples to oranges comparison.
FWIW - I would have bought 1.0 on PC over the boardgame knowing I would only be playing solo.
If you're into that sort of game though, and it does feel exciting to play, go for it. This is a great price for the game, lower than KS#1 and KS#2.
Now if you're hesitant about space, the number of components and getting that many people together week after week to play, digital might be the better option. Downside is you need everyone to get a copy... plus is, well you can play by yourself and play differently either (Guild Master mode) too. It's not an RPG or like DnD in any real way. There is no roleplaying involved although the campaign does provide for some decision making. This is more like HeroQuest, think Dungeon Crawler. Another bit of advice, if someone winds up with a character they hate, switch it. Each of these characters/classes plays quiet differently, and it is perfectly okay to find out you hate one and love another... especially after unlocking and finding out what is available.
This massive box will also look great under a tree... just saying.
but i usually avoid buying popular board games from amazon since they have a counterfeit problem. would price match to target in a heart beat if target carried it (extra 5% too)
