According to this test, these types of helmets provide better protection than the ones that cover the back of the skull, urban helmets.

Shoot. Just bought this last week for $50 on ebay for my spouse.

This is a great helmet. #1 recommended by Consumer Reports. It is easily adjustable and has great airflow.

The "Bike Peddler Take A Look Cycling Eyeglass Mirror" rear view mirror works great with this helmet. Clips onto the visor, is very adjustable and compact.

It would work fine for either. It looks more road like but it wouldn't stick out on a mountain bike. I see mountain bikers with expensive aero road helmets. Lots of mountain bikers use one helmet if they also ride road

Compared to maybe skate style helmets which were the lowest rated on that test, yes. Most actual MTB helmets are almost exactly the same as the helmet for sale except the protection extends lower to the base of the skull. This is to protect against the abnormal surface we crash on like a protruding rock. The helmet above only work of the helmet itself takes the impact. If a protruding rock or root strikes the skull before the helmet then it's useless.
