Any recommendations for a standalone battery charger that can do at least 8 at a time and doesn't have to be done in pairs?
If this charger has to be used in pairs, that's not good. That means it's probably not monitoring the voltage of each cell and not smart charging them.
The eneloop set Costco used to carry included a 4 Panasonic charger which charged 1-4. It was a slow charger but the set was cheap enough that you could buy 2 sets and use two of them to charge 8 at a time. Might want to keep an eye out of that.

I have one of these "pair chargers" at home I use for backup. It is not a smart charger and rarely use it except to give my batts a head start before switching them to a smart lacrosse charger.

I have a Powerex MH-C800s and it does 8 at a time and any number of batteries. It's $40. It has fast charge, slow charge, and battery conditioning modes and each cell charge status is displayed on the lcd screen.

ok, the lacrosse brand sounds familiar in my limited research. is there a certain model or even another brand that you'd recommend? my budget's about twenty bucks but let me know if i'm reaching too low. thanks!

Yes, I bought both the Eneloop and the Energizer rechargeable batteries about 5 years ago to use in Xbox controllers. The Enelops still work and all the Energizers seem to die quickly and some dead.
I know that is not a great comparison and some may argue that was batteries 5 years ago, things have changed, depends on how you used them, etc...but that is my limited observation. Any others want to weigh in?
Agreed. Wasted money on a lot of energizers because of reviews and made in Japan, but nothing like eneloops. Trying IKEAs now because they are supposed to be rewrapped eneloops

My exp with Ikea regular batteries have been not that great. Regular batteries die sooner

I have this setup and it does not need to be charged in pairs. I literally just used it today.

I use it for Xbox controllers and it's been going strong for about a year. I have no complaints.

At this price I will pickup another if I see it in store.

In that case, may be fine. Just going on what the other poster indicated. Does it really charge a battery full in one hour? Sounds a little harsh on the charging amperage.

Yes it charges quickly. The batteries get fairly warm. Prob shouldn't leave them charging when you are not home.

I have an Energizer NiMH charger that has a cooling fan for the batteries, and charges AA's in 15 minutes from dead to full. They get toasty!

I bought a pack yesterday to supplement my aging Eneloops .The provided charger seems like it was designed mainly for AA batteries. You have to slot in the AAA batteries at an angle. Overall, it still works.

After a quick review on The Wirecutter, sounds like the Eneloops are the better buy? Or am I mistaken? Either the Eneloops or the Laddas from IKEA seem to be top picks, so long as they're manufactured in Japan and not China.
