Seems rather high for what amounts to strips of metal.

If you were to use that logic then you could say the same thing about millions of other things that are being sold... This is significantly cheaper than the other options at this price. I'm sure if people could do it themselves so easily then they would have already

you give people too much credit for doing things themselves even if those things are easy to do

Just use a metal door and metal frame instead of expensive reinforcing for a wood door and frame

I don't understand this. Why not just get a storm door?
This kit is designed to slow down someone who wants to kick in your entry door. This will give the occupants time to react before the door is breached.

Most entry doors (dead bolts, door jamb, etc.) will yield to a determined forced entry.

Well, I could do about 4 exterior doors for the price of a Glock 19, plus none of that pesky "just shot my own kid in the dark" part.

I prevent home invasions the old fashioned way: kids' toys in the yard and a well-worn minivan in the driveway. Clearly these people are broke. Wink

What nonsense are you on about?
I like guns well enough, but what he's saying is good sense from a criminal target perspective. What criminal would want to bother with a house that clearly has a bunch of kids and not much money? Only thing I might add is a huge dogfood bowl that says "MONSTER" on it. The criminals would move on to the next house without even pausing. nod

Just wasting money, you can get good security door for 200. And only take me less than 2 hour to install.
Two door always better than one

Replace the whole door and frame is expensive. Even DIY still using a lot time

I always question such mechanisms. They are as good as the door they used on.
Is frame anchored correctly?
They may help slow somebody down, if criminal is willing to get in, they will just use a window. Or maybe pick a lock (lock picking lawyer has good classes on youtube).
Just getting better door, locks and security system is better investment.

The problem that good quality doors are very uncommon in USA but standard in Europe

So I have 3 of these, all on my exterior doors and figure to give my input on these things. Bought them a while ago and still use them to this day. When I bought them, I got them on sale and remember them being much cheaper than this (may the predecessor version?), but who knows, maybe my memory is failing.

Basically what they are are steel door jambs that use really long screws and also give you metal reinforce hinges and on the door too. The important part is the door jamb, where if you are like me and most people with a wood frame door, the purpose is to reinforce with metal vs just wood. The long screws really hold it in, and the metal is pretty thick and really strong. With a deadbolt locked in place, the door jamb won't be moving any time soon. The long screws are a key factor in this to hold the metal but also to give it the strength it needs. The one thing I recommend is to take your time lining these up, there is little flexibility once you install them, so make sure they are in the right spot. But yes this does make the door jamb stronger and with a steel door and deadbolt, it will take a bit more effort to break down. The steel jamb has multiple pre-cut outs for the where the door lock and handle meet the jamb, just a basic twist and break off kind of thing; beware of little burrs after.

I also installed the hinges, which are just steel that goes over the top of the existing hinges. You just unscrew a few of the screws that hold a hinge in and put this over top. Pretty easy. Seems like it is pretty sturdy as it uses the same concept as the door jamb. You don't need to take the entire door or hinges out to install. Haven't really tested the hinges, but rather not try to break my door.

I did not install the little door reinforcement part as I had a steel door but also they were a tad small to fit. If you have a steel door, don't bother with these imo. They are easy to install though if you did want to put them in. Be aware of the space between the door and jamb though, these may make it a bit too tight.

Pros
  • Does reinforce a door, especially the jamb. Feels solid
  • Cheaper than buying a new door especially one with a steel frame
  • Not noticeable after installed, so it looks clean. Nice finish
  • Thick steel
  • Does give you peace of mind at night. Not an end-all solutions
  • Zero issues if you put it in right
  • You can do it yourself as long as you have a drill and screwdriver

Cons
  • Remember them being cheaper, but if you really want to secure the door then go for it
  • You get a work out when you install as the steel is heavy and the screws are very long. Power tools and drilling things properly is a must.
  • Depending on how well you break off the pre-cut out holes, you may need to file some burrs as it can be a little sharp

Tips/Notes
  • Measure and align several times before installing. Just a pencil/pen to mark holes. Install one or two screws first and see if it aligns first before installing all of them.
  • Someone mentioned making it yourself. If you got the tools and materials, go for it, but most people don't and this will be a cheaper option.
  • You may have to take off the original door catches when installing the jamb
  • Ultimately up to you if you think you need these. Things like this, camera, guns and dogs all have a different place if you are looking at home security.
  • Overall I am happy with the product

Hope this helps.

Right — at least for my area, you have two kinds of breakins:

95%+ are crimes of opportunity. Thieves check for unlocked cars, unlocked houses (with nobody home), and grab what they can as quickly as possible. If you make yourself a less likely target, you're better off. That can be through deterrents like this one, not leaving trash on the curb that shows expensive gear, not bragging about wealth on social media, etc.

The other minority are targeted crimes, ie they specifically want what you have.

In the latter case, organized thieves are going to beat just about anything you've got in place.
