I believe most recommend reading it in release order. So between the 10th and 11th books it looks like. It can spoil some things from the earlier books. Like some tensions, some people's motivations, who's good, who's bad, etc. It's been a long time since I've read it but I can think of four characters you aren't too sure about in the beginning of the series that this book kind of removes the some of the mystery around them. But others have started with it and still enjoyed the series
Nah, and honestly, it's more rewarding to read after reading three or four books in the main series.

This prequel is one of the worst books in the whole series. It's a drag to read. Somehow managed to finish.

No it's not. Read it after the rest of the series and it's like a behind the scenes. I actually really liked it as an add on. I wouldn't start with it though.

I got recommended to read it after book 5 and that was fine. I think by then you pretty much know who everyone is that's featured in New Spring and is also in the mainline series. New Spring also gives a brief encounter and introduction to a character that first pops up out of nowhere in book 7.

That said, I thought New Spring was pretty boring and was expecting it to cover more of the action that happens around the timeframe it takes place. But it's not fluff, it actually adds to the plot. It also shows us how two of the main characters first meet which IMO is the highlight of the book.

Someone needs to put out an abridged version of the whole series that's just Mat's scenes with his spear and band of merry men

I remember really enjoying this book because it helped me understand one of my favorite characters better.

With that said, the WoT series isn't really a friendly book to read. It goes beyond purple prose, where the writer describes the color of a wall for a whole chapter and nothing seems to happen - and this gets worse after each book, especially the 4th one. There used to be a joke on WoT fan forums where a gif summarizes each book in a single sentence since nothing happens.

Doesn't mean it's a bad series, I mean I spent my H.S and college days following the series. I am saying that the Amazon Prime original series may be easier to get into for a lot of people, and that's okay because this series really is worth exploring by any means!

I will say my default for the series will now be to say "watch the tv show then read the books" because of books 4-6. I got to book 10 and just stopped, telling myself I would continue after Jordan finished it. I'm probably going to resume it next year to just finish it but now I feel like I have to reread everything.

In this scenario I think reading the prequel first is likely fine. But who knows this series is massive.

Full disclosure... I'm a fan of the series. I've read it a couple of times and listened (thanks to a long commute) to the audiobooks a couple of times. Crossroads of Twilight is one that drags a little. If you have the time, I highly recommend the audiobooks that are read by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading. I don't recommend the new audiobook version of The Eye of the World read by Rosamund Pike. Kramer and Reading do a fantastic job reading the series according to whether the chapter has a male or female POV. You can also speed it up or slow it down according to your taste.

Like others have said, I don't recommend reading New Spring until after you've read book 6. It can even wait until after you've completed the series (and want more) or even not at all. It was going to be part of a prequel trilogy. I dont think there are any plans to complete the trilogy so there's that.

FWIW, Brandon Sanderson did a great job picking up where Jordan left off. Robert Jordan had left a boatload of notes on how he wanted it to end.

FWI also W... if you have any desire to read this series (IMO) AVOID AND FLEE the tv series. It's NOT an adaptation. They've changed, watered down, and butchered just about everything in the books.

Literally the worst book I have ever read. Maybe I should have read the original WoT books first, but man this book was a slog to get through with unlikeable characters.

Eh I feel like they had a tough job. The first episode was kind of a train wreck, and the changs to Perrin is.. meh. But I think for what they had it's more like what TWD did. Think of the book as the freeway and the tv shows as taking feeder roads, back roads, etc.

Absolutely you should have read the original WoT books first. This book is more for people who've read the series and want more.

They definitely had a tough job. I'm speaking more as a big fan of the books... people who haven't read the books, and probably don't intend to, may like the tv series.

As a fan though, it's hard for me to get past things like the change to Perrin, Thom Merrilin, DR possibly being either a male or female, the Egwene in the river ceremony, etc. There are other changes mentioned to come of combining characters, removing places, etc that just make it difficult for me to swallow. We'll see I guess but I think liberties were taken with the source material to satisfy a certain demographic of audience, which means they either missed the complexity Jordan put in the books or didn't think their audience is smart enough to discern and accept as a fictional world.

I really think this book fits best after book 5. It's nice to get a hint at some of the characters, like Caduaane, before they show up, and getting to learn more about Moraine, Siuan, and Lan.

Most of the YouTube people say after book 5 read the prequel. I am only on book 4.
