QNAP really has to do some branding cleanup similar to what Hyundai and T-Mobile did. If it wasn't for that bad reputation these would be selling like hotcakes. Makes 0 sense that with lower hardware specs Synology is selling out all of their units and QNAP with better specs is still trying to sell theirs.

Supposedly, when I got it (18 months ago), QNAP was the choice of those who want a little more customization and control. This may still be true, but I also found that their OS and firmware updates not only default you to settings you don't want, but also fairly regularly cause issues with standard hardware.
Honestly - once you hit that $600 mark, you're better off building.
Or if you're not an idiot and know how to tech.
Sounds like a comment that comes from a great mind.

I'm not trying to debate or fight, trying to keep it respectful without calling anyone dumb. If you read my first post I was just hoping that QNAP did something to improve their image. I am for sure hoping that they do. It is best for all of us to have them as a player in this game. But what they are doing with their customer support and brand is not really working. If you re-read my post I didn't speak about security or losing data anywhere. All I was bringing up was their bad reputation customer service wise. I even brought up that their product has 4stars which indicate their hardware must not be that bad, thus why they need to improve their brand image.
It is exactly what happened with Hyundai, when they started they had some bad products and warranty that trashed their brand. Word of mouth got spread about the bad quality and sale tanked. Even after they had improved their quality, so a new CEO had to take action about that matter and improved the product by increasing the warranty and making the brand more customer friendly. Today Hyundai is one of the top sellers world wide of cars. Unlike what happened to Daewoo for example, a brand that died because of the bad reputation and null action to improve it.
T-Mobile same boat, they had a decent (not great) network but horrible with customer service. New CEO comes in and flips the company around becoming one of the biggest Wireless carriers on the US today. He did it by changing the brands image and making it more customer friendly. He changed the culture favoring good customer service. At the same time huge investments were done to the wireless network to support the other side of the coin.
I think QNAP has all the potential to beat Synology, but they need to change that bad perception they currently have. All they have to do is improve their customer service and add some services to their software that will give customer some re-assurance.
For example, increase warranty terms. Maybe add some fancy anti-malware/virus/ransomware software that not only protects the NAS but also the other devices like phones and PCs. Free cloud backup, or something.
In the end the brand survives from sales, and not from only smart tech people (minority) buying their products. Why do you think Apple is such a huge company? Because of all the smart tech people buying Apple products?

And I'll be honest, when I see people complaining about tech, I've been a sysadmin long enough to know it's 99% their own fault. And I won't go back to the NSA, even if they beg. farking scummy agency.
If I didn't have one, I'd still seriously consider this - if I need a 6-bay.
