Dang not seeing the Medium option for men's hoody.
Is this a good mid layer for hiking or urban use?
I have both the Patagonia Micro puff and Arcteryx Atom LT and both are great mid layers for hiking and urban use. The Patagonia is slightly warmer, the Atom LT is more breathable and more quiet with less "swish" (for in an office environment etc.). The micro puff isn't loud by any means though. The Atom LT hood and neck is more comfortable, the hood on the micro puff is smaller and tighter for me. The Atom LT is more athletic fit so it may feel tight around the body and the length is shorter. I am 5' 10" 170 lbs and wear M on both. If I can only keep one I'd go with Atom LT.
For the vast majority of people, a $30 jacket from Costco would be just as good.
This is very true.
I own jackets from both and the Costco $15 32 degrees puffy is very warm and one that I reach for a lot. I don't do much technical stuff, but I do love Patagonia for quality and for customer service. I bought the micro puff myself and returned it, not because I didn't like it but because I didn't think I would use it for its intended purpose.
Recently I've been loving their "air" lines for breathability since I get cold easily but also overheat easily. The nano air is awesome, and so is the r1 air (I got the crew to wear under stuff). Also, their silent down is my favorite casual down jacket for lack of the puffy jacket "swish"! It's soooooo soft and warm and looks great IMO.
I bought the micro puff for my husband, who also doesn't really do technical stuff anymore but who might actually appreciate it more. He wears the cheap puffy jacket I got him from Old Navy more. If he ever went backpacking/camping/bike-packing with his guy friends again though, the micro puff would come in quite handy.
For those who don't know, the micro puff is filled with synthetic filling (called Plumafill) that's made to be as light and packable as down, but it will be more water resistant (down clumps up when wet and thus loses its insulating abilities). The material is thin and not that durable, bc it's made to be light. It packs down into a teeny tiny pack, but is decently warm. There aren't that many pockets bc again it's made to be light and zippers are heavy.
I bought Micro puff jacket for my wife 2-3 years ago and the Seams started unraveling within a year. Nano is discontinued already. She stills wears it and ask me to buy another one. Are Nano better quality than Micro?

Just wait for REI to post a 20% off an outlet item when they put their unsold inventory there. 50% off is my threshold to buy.
