Avoiding the whole larger Synology vs Qnap which is better debate, this is a step up from the DS220+. The direct competitor for the QNAP TS-253D is the Synology DS720+ which both have quad core processors and is hardware upgrade from the DS220+. The DS220+ is a dual core processor...perhaps the better question is do you need a DS220+ or a DS720+. If the answer is a DS720+, then this would be a suitable alternative to consider, otherwise the DS220+ is much cheaper.

Thanks. Any idea if the RAM is upgradeable on this (as it is on the 220)?

one more thing that's weird to me is that

The TS-253D has a PCIe 2.0 x4 slot.
while higher model 453 and 653 has PCIe 2.0 x2 slot.
