How do these shoes compared to Pearl iZumi or Shimano shoes?
I haven't worn shoes from Pearl iZumi nor Shimano, but I am sure they are comparable.
The Freeriders are staples in the MTB community. I was familiar with Five Ten and their Stealth rubber well before getting into mountain biking because they made my first pair of aggressive climbing shoes (I had the Dome Mids for hiking and the Arrowheads for climbing). In fact, the name 'Five Ten' is a climbing term.
I purchased a pair of the Freerider Pros since the poster above, kobid, mentioned that the quality is lightyears apart from the standard Freeriders. I find that the Freeriders are a bit wide for my foot. I will keep my standard Freeriders as a backup if the Pros fit better. If not, luckily, REI has a great return policy.
Those kind of shoes (if you mountain bike) are great if you run cleats. You get some super great grip and nearly eliminate slippage - even if you remove your foot, you can still maintain grip with less than your full weight on the platform.
