You can buy a 20" box fan and a high MERV 20" square furnace filter at the hardware for $30-$35 many places. Tape the filter to the back of the fan (if well taped it will pull entirely through the filter, and also keep the fan interior/motor clean), and it will be EITHER, a fantastic budget alternative that moves titanic amounts of air, OR, used in tandem with a filter like this, DRAMATICALLY lower the amount of particulate that enters the HEPA filter, which should extend it's operational life.
* Carbon filters should be replaced more frequently than HEPA filters, in most applications. The service life of either depends on application of course. HEPA filters won't remove organic compounds from the air, so if you're concerned about second hand smoke, VOCs, many odors, etc, know that requires a carbon filter. Also know that the electrostatic based cleanable filters tend to produce ozone which can smell nice but aggravate those with sensitive respiratory systems.

Basically with a single high merv / hepa filter you restrict the air movement alot. The cube is 4 of those filters taped together allowing air to enter more places. This allows for higher air flow while using higher merv / hepa filters.
