I have two aerogarden elites and I've built a few custom systems myself. Pretty much all systems are relatively the same but the light on that one seems pretty weak and gimmicky. Plants don't require much to grow in general and it will probably still work, but the reviews even point out that light is way weaker than any aerogarden model. I moved mine into the basement due to the amount of light they produce. It's also worth noting that this unit is using non-standard sizes cups that are smaller than the aerogarden. This means it will be difficult to find replacement grow pods compared to aerogarden which has tons of generic clones for cheap.

I paid $60 for my aerogarden elites during one of their best sales to date. I have no regrets for buying them but they're certainly not worth $80+. I think $60 is the most reasonable price for one of these types of systems. They are great for starting seeds off and you can easily transplant them to soil if you choose to, or move them to a larger hydroponic system.

Here are some great videos on the subject:

Lastly here is a good picture comparing the aerogarden to the "christmas hydroponics" system lights. It's worth noting the construction on the offbrand is way flimsier and cheaper than the aerogarden. You can clearly see a lot of corners were cut for cost effective savings. The Aerogarden has zero flex to it and is completely sturdy. Everything about the offbrand flexes a lot and is flimsy. https://i.imgur.com/Wdimbdh.png

I got my aerogarden primarily for this and I've never had success with them sadly

This is too small to grow anything but a few herbs or small salad greens.

That is an ignorant comment at best. Generally speaking herb plants should remain small to produce the best product for consumption. Allowing the plant to get large would decrease the flavor of the plant. Part of gardening and growing your own food indoors is the prune regularly. If you do not prune, your plant will get wild fast and the taste will fade even faster.

They make dwarf and self-pollinating vegetables specifically for growing indoors and in these size applications.
