Yes, this is exactly why I originally got the 6500 but when I was using it out on a jetty or the canal, I couldn't get used to it. That's just me. Maybe on a boat, it might be easier to be mindful to close the bail before reeling, but I never fish from a boat so idk.
Or if you're letting the bait sink first like jigs or high low rigs where there's a pause. But again, mine has never prematurely tripped on me that I can remember. I lose more lures from snagged wind knots on the rod than anything else.
Thanks for the link, makes me wonder if there's a way to improve or perhaps tighten the feature instead of removing it completely.
I've always manually closed my bail- maybe bc I grew up with cheap gear, but I still do it with my nicer, smaller freshwater spinning reels. I've often wondered what the most common way was. I don't like the extra effort on the handle.

How does this reel compares to Daiwa BG? I need a reel for crab snaring.
I heard the new Daiwa BG MQ are outstanding reels, like most of the mid level- high end Daiwas. With the help of the mag seal tech, it keeps the inside from getting cooked from saltwater corrosion where these Penn's have issues. I was on the fenced on buying a battle/slammer versus a BG MQ
/Saltist MQ and leaned toward Daiwa. Too many great reviews to pass up. Also if this is for saltwater, look into a Shimano Saragosa!

I've been super happy with the performance of my Spinfisher VI, which I do not in any way, shape, or form treat with the care it deserves. I fish exclusively by snagging with a weighted treble hook on the beach. I've been known to drop the reel in the sand, and rinse it off in the (salt) water. I never ever ever rinse the reel or do anything at the end of the season.

But that reel just takes it and keeps giving me fish.

Spinfisher deals are few and far between. I can't decide if I should bite on this for my 2nd rig.

Get this instead of the spin fisher or anything out there. The Slammer is better all around. Better gear set, better handle, almost waterproof. For the price, this is a really good deal.

Same on manually closing the bail. Jimmy Houston made a statement years ago that no doing so puts a 1/2 twist in your line so I ran with it.
Never ran a test here in the windy Texas flats, but I may do that over the winter just to see...

Great price for the 4500 and 6500. I've been using a 5500 for a few years now and it's a beast. Holding up very well for the striper season in the northeast from the surf.

Just note at the 6500 size it's a manual bail..the auto bail trip as you turn the reel is only for 5500 and under.
I thought the manual bail wouldn't be a big deal so I originally got a 6500. However, since I've mainly fished fresh water with smaller reels for most my life, I ended up returning the 6500 because I just couldn't get used to the manual bail. I got the 5500 and am very happy. I don't think it ever accidentally tripped. The 4500 should still be a decent size and power.
I always manually flip all my bails on all my spinning reels.

Using the auto flip bail you leave yourself open to wind knots if you fish with braid.

Cast, put the line back on the roller tight, and flip the bail and you will never have a wind knot.

It's second nature at this point.

But on a side note, the manual bail was how I got my "broken" eBay slammer 7500 for $100. Listing said the bail didn't work, but they just didn't realize it was supposed to operate that way. Brand new reel.

Spinfisher is nice, slammer is a very good upgrade, but I will always say the Daiwa BG is by far the best reel for the price point.

If you find a deal on the BG, don't pass on it if you need another reel.

my 8500 HS was put to the test this year, bft, yft, blue shark, sun fish, all range from 80-300 lbs with no problem , drag was really smooth, i was amaze how well it performed and nothing broken, especially fighting bluefin tuna w/ bad drag is really easily breaking line, but we had 0 line broke.

Would I be able to use this setup to catch some yellows and bonitos? I want to put on some 30 lb line and cast from a boat
I hate Penn rods. Love their reels. Rods always break or fall apart even with careful attention to maintenance. My fav jigging rod is a Shimano Trevala.
