Several things to remember about the Foodsaver. ( I have had 8-10 different models)
I use both the upright and flat model currently.
First- Most people burn up the pump by sealing too many packages in a row. Pump needs to cool.
Also if have a bag that is taking too long to seal. I watch the sealing and if it seems to be take a long time I will stop and and flatten/straighten plastic or remove some food if the pouch is Tenting.

It really bothers me too to waste plastic but the pouch should have a couple inches below the seal without tenting so will lay flat easily. This will ensure a quick seal and not stress the pump laboring on and on.

That is part of the reason I use two machines. I will place one to seal then go to the other machine to make another bag (sealing the bottom) and load the next bag before going back to the one I am sealing to let it cool off. So far both my machines have lasted over 5 years. I do a lot of dual bag seals or triple bags. Seal the bottom, then turn sideways seal length wise to create a dual/triple slot bag. One slot for rice, one for sauce or gravy one for meat and veggies for example. Then just make dinner by dropping in Sous Vide bath to heat. One pouch one meal for a single person.

Food saver quality has dropped a lot, I would say a 20% failure rate. Unless I've been really unlucky.

Would like to get something like this, but have heard that foodsavers don't last anymore and have lots of issues. Been eyeing a vacuum chamber sealer from Costco, but it's like $650 and heavy duty....

I've had this for ~2 years and it still working good for us. I think I paid about this much for it with Kohls cash and discounts.

Have had my for 4 years. Have sealed 5 deer and probably 100 bags for sous vide.

Mine was a GM 2150 Wingman for $60 so the price really hasn't changed in that time.

I bought the Costco foodsaver VS3180 for $150. Thinking about returning and buying this instead to save some $$$. Does anyone have experience with the two? Any reason to keep the Costco one instead of purchasing this one?

I have the Costco model and it's worked fine for almost two years. Also you can't beat Costco's return policy.

I've had mine from Costco for 4 years now. I have to hold the sealer shut on "auto mode" but other than that still works great! They've changed the design and you can get the equivalent at Sams (different color) for $99.98 through December 31.

Heads up, Costco frequently has that model on sale for 99.99. I'd pick up a 3000 series for 99.99 over a 2000 series for 69.99, personally.

I bought this model from Costco about 5+ years ago. Still working strong without placing gaskets or anything. I use it weekly for bulk meats and sous-vide

We use ours all of the time. Search Amazon for generic bags to save a bunch of money.

All the time, I have to buy various bags because companies stop selling them often so you have you go with a different vendor. I found the sometimes that 8" bags won't seal, but the 10" bags generally work.
