Having gone through a literal 6 hour ordeal in my local Walmart store...these are not always shipped properly activated when purchased online. My first order went absolutely fine, but the second turned into a nightmare (AT&T suspended the line after a day, citing a point-of-purchase error). The local store should be able to fix it, however it's not a guarantee (in my case they returned the phone but couldn't resell it to me because their POS wouldn't scan it - wound up having to sell me a new phone from in-store). And because the e-receipt given to you by Walmart doesn't include the IMEI/SN of the phone you won't be able to get it fixed by AT&T.

The first was scanned and shipped properly from Walmart.com. Popped my existing SIM into the new phone and everything works just fine.
The second was NOT scanned properly but shipped to me regardless. When I put my other existing SIM into this phone it did activate according to Apple's server and I had service. After 24 hours I could no longer make/receive calls and had no data connectivity.
AT&T explained that because the retailer did not scan the phone properly they suspended the line/SIM that was last inserted in the phone (my best guess is their system attempting to recognize a stolen phone). They offered no other contingency than taking the phone back to Walmart to have their wireless department "rescan" the phone so it could be properly activated and to have my service reactivated.
Ultimately my Walmart store couldn't perform this voodoo magic, so they wound up returning the phone I bought online and sold me a new phone that was in stock at the store. I still had to call AT&T and have them re-activate the line after I gave them the IMEI of the new phone, now everything is working.
Simply not worth the headache, you're better off going to the AT&T store if you want this exact phone/carrier. And for what it's worth I did actually go back to my local Walmart today to see if they'd do a price adjustment (since I went through this calamity 2 days ago). Wouldn't budge.
Can't re-iterate enough, if you want this phone go to the AT&T store and take advantage of their promotion that's running. Reading over the Walmart Black Friday iPhone post it seems like a lot of people are getting shafted by Walmart over weird activation/bill issues (not just limited to AT&T prepaid).

Can anyone poke holes in this?
Cricket price is $180 with no extra taxes (it's service charges) and free shipping. Walmart of course charges your local tax, so final price for most of us will be between $170-180 plus driving time and expense.
If i buy from Cricket, I get 3 months of service included, where I get no bonus service from Walmart. If I can get the $60/mo service downgraded, then bonus! But I'll assume that's not possible anymore.
I can use a Cricket referral to get $25 or more credit, and also $5 CB from rak10. If I downgrade after the 3 months to the $30 plan, well then that covers at least month 4.
So worst case I have to pay $60 more for 2 months of service at months 5 and 6 to get phone fully unlocked. And discounted Cricket refill cards are always coming available.
All in all it seems like Cricket is a better deal, unless you NEED to have ATT prepaid service especially on a family plan.
Thoughts?
