Slammer III is sealed whereas this is not. Not to say it's not a good reel. For the money both are great. Personally, I'd go with the Slammer III if you intend to fish this A LOT in the heavy surf. But the BGs are tanks too, and very easy to service. Get one of each! LOL

I am looking for a 4000 - 5000 reel to pair with my Tsunami Trophy II MH 10 footer for the surf. No experience on the boats at all....

You probably want a 4000-5000 size reel for this paired with at least a 7-8' long rod rated 15-30 or 15-40 minimum for targeting local yellows presumably in SoCal.

i personally agree with you, if budget allowed, i will grab both. But most likely, if will grab (2) Daiwa BGs, more flexible and almost the same price as (1) slammer iii. lol

Yea, you can't go wrong with either honestly. The BGs are tanks. Slammer I'd say if you don't want to deal with as much maintenance on a frequent basis and you're fishing around saltwater frequently (especially heavy surf).

Depends on what kind of fish you're after. The 3000 would be good for light surf fishing and light inshore action. It's the kind of reel you wouldn't get as tired throwing jigs/lures/etc on often when fishing the surf or even from a kayak. 4000 would be a good crossover between fishing lures, fishing live bait on a boat/yak/etc, or bait & wait from shore. If you plan on bait&wait fishing or targeting larger species from shore or boat, go 5000 or higher.

Thank you for the note. I recently got a PENN Battle III 8000, saw you had experiences in all of these, that is my only Salt Water reel for now, among the recent two deals from Daiwa BG and Slammer, which would be your top choice? I am debating whether I should get the Daiwa and returning the PENN now since it is still in the box.

I haven't personally used a BG but I know enough guys who have and who fish more than I do, that I can pretty much attest to their reliability and ease of serviceability which are really the most important factors.

The Battle III is a solid reel as well. I'd liken the Battle series to BG simply due to the fact that they're both not sealed. The Slammer III is a superior reel to the BG. If I had to rank these, the Battle and BG would be head-to-head, the Spinfisher would be the next step up on the Penn line and then the Slammer above that. I think Daiwa's direct competition with the Slammer would the Satlist reels. I'm not a fan of Daiwa's magseal technology though - I have a [broken] Fuego LT where the magseal fluid failed. You do have to replace that stuff and it's a mess to deal with AND widely unavailable (Daiwa doesn't make their magseal fluid available to the consumer market). So if you're looking for a sealed reel, the Slammer at this price is a no-brainer. The Slammer IV was announced recently so they are likely clearing stock of the IIIs.

In for an 8000 to complete my collection. Fished in Miami on a 3000 and 5000 for a few years mostly salt, sometimes every weekend and have yet to see any wear at all on mine. Maintenance is nothing more than oiling and greasing every 6 months or so. Both my reels look brand new after all these years. Quick note the sizes are correct so 3000 is 3/5th the size of the 5000 and so on. The 3000 is pretty small. Also definitely wouldn't use anything smaller than the 5000 for pier fishing on a 9 ft pole because for one thing you want to have the reel hold enough line. Only thing is these things get heavy after a few hours. So short of getting a harness, lighter is usually better. The "graphite" apron on these scratches real easily so be sure to get a soft neoprene storage cover for them. Otherwise they are smooth as butter, you won't find better.
