Played the first two games almost 20 years ago and back then, yes they were amazing. Tried playing this last year and it was very difficult. The style of game play stayed the same and did not change or adapt to how games are now. Really for true fans who want to relive the older games.

No need to play previous games. It's a serious time sink that may not be worth it due to the outdated system (time system, in which you must have to wait at certain times in order to advance the main story plotline. And there is no time-skip or fast forward). Secondly, there is a very good recap video provided by Shenmue 3, of the events of the first two games.

Price probably won't get any lower, and you'd be ready for Shenmue 4, whenever that releases. I personally just watched the 4 hour movie on Youtube, that captured the main story and cut out all the excess.

Haha I think I might do that. You mean to watch the 4 hr movie for Shenmue 1 and 2 yea? And yea, not sure why Im even considering it when I have the backlog I have...

Yeah 1 is a 23 year old game thats hard to work with even if you have the nostalgia for it it.

Funny. That game came out as nostalgia trip for mid 80s japan. In 1999 13 years later. Its now been nearly twice as long since its release.

Shenmue seems like an important piece of gaming history as it had some revolutionary game mechanics. However, it doesn't seem to stand the test of time as those same mechanics have evolved so greatly.

I like your reasoning.. I was thinking perhaps I am not as patient now as I was then. There is no way I am going to spend hours moving crates at a simulated job on the docks in Japan.

I loved this game so much as a kid. Thanks for the post. I just get up and do something else or get into the collectibles when it comes to the time system.

Game play was painfully slow. I remembered there was a mission where you need to wait for a long time for a character to come home in order to complete that mission and if you miss that time window, you need to wait for the next day.

Hopefully that what they pay you to play it. Not good at all. I had the original on Dreamcast back in the day. This game plays as if it was designed 20 years ago.
