I bet they cost similar in the '70s. Tried to find out what they charged exactly and couldn't

What's the difference between 5.77 and 4 for the pack of 1?

We have this new version, and the slider mechanism on the bottom that keeps the pieces from falling is very loose. Pieces have just randomly fallen; we now keep a hand on it at all times during gameplay... very annoying. Not sure if it's just the board we got or if all of them are like that these days. We got to play the 90's version last week during Thanksgiving and that board's slider was noticeably more solid and no issues of it sliding to the open position on its own.

I got the knock off version from Five Below, been playing with kids for over 3 years, it has a folding board that drops the checkers, no problems and it's sturdy. When you are done playing the checkers fall into tray, and it folds into storage with a slider.

This "original" design will require piece to be all over the place, or hold them on hand, leave on table etc. I wish I could find the link to the one I have, this one:

This is for nostalgic older people.
Kids would just scan the 3D barcode and download the app.

I'm betting dollar to donuts that this 2021 version is pale in build comparison to the 70s version when it was first introduced.

You're right. All of the new Hasbro games (Connect 4, Trouble, Twister) kind of look like they did in the 1970s but at clearly made with much cheaper materials.

For example, the old Connect 4 used to be made of really heavy duty material, but is now just lightweight plastic—the kind you'd find in a snap-together model kit. For that slider piece on the bottom you literally have to snap it apart and put it together and as someone else mentioned it's not as smooth to slide as previous models, although it you position it just right you shouldn't have issues with it falling. Similarly, the Trouble board is just flimsy and cheap.

What's a bit interesting is that as far as I can tell most of these new toys are made in countries like the USA or Mexico, which I do appreciate (and I bought it for that reason).

You're spot on. I played the one from my childhood a month or two ago and it was so much better than the flimsy POS I bought last year. If you think the new version of connect 4 is bad, have you seen the new version of lite-brite? It's horrible.

Would it be bad if we made connect five? Digital version would be cheaper and more realistic lol
