Read the various tools reviews on Pro Tools Review.

The Skil 12v is a solid 8/10 star from oscillating multi tool up drill etc imo.

Yes, anyone can spend much more for 10/10 Makita, Fein, etc, but really, one should also consider intended usage, projects, and need if price is a point of consideration.

Plus, price purchased when they break = hurts less with more inexpensive brands.

...

Brushless motors = more power, less vibration at lower voltages. So a 12v brushless can be as good and better than a 18v brushed.

...

There's only a few major conglomerates of tools.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/L...ufacturers

Many China owned, although some previously American ccompanies.

Things have gotten good enough that everything from the Harbor Freight on up will do fine for lighter, occasional usage by home owners not into doing lots of projects.

My rough ranking

Low end 3/10 to 5/10
Harbor Freight, Hart

Low mid 5/10 to 7/10
Ryobi

Mid range 8/10
Milwaukee, Skil

Higher 9/10 to 10/10
Dewalt, Bosch, Makita, Fein

...

Features.
People often look to much at the battery voltage and brand, not at the features and actual performance.

E.g. Skil 12v oscillating multi tool.
Brushless, thus 18v/20v brushed power. And lower vibration than brushed.
Easy flip up blade change. Some need a screw turned many times.
Light
Tested to produce smooth cuts without too much wandering.

So yes, some might accidentally by that more powerful multi tool, only to want to toss it into the trash because it uses a screw to change blades and that takes forever.

...

Or battery / charger features.
E.g. You can use Skil Pwrcore batteries like cell phone power banks. Can't with many of the competition.
Eg Pwrcore chargers have a jump charge feature. When almost empty, use the jump feature to add 25% battery runtime in 5 minutes. Not all the competition have rapid chargers (ryobi does).

...

Some get into the mindset of I must invest in 1 battery system's tools so I can use the same battery with all my tools.

That's fine .... If you like compromising on tool performance and features. E.g. I bought into the Dewalt brand because it's high powered, runs and runs, etc, but the weight and noise of some tools kills. For a home owner doing light repairs, might be better if they pick tools that fit their needs regardless of brand because it really isn't that bad to have 2-3 chargers and battery types around.

Luckily, as you move up the quality chain, the drawbacks of system tools are fewer.

...

Replacement battery costs.
Batteries always die someday.
Good to research prices at home stores and ebay.
Happily for Skil 12v, almost always under $20 new ebay for a 2.0 amp battery. Top end tool brands often have expensive batteries.

...

Many times, it's the blade, tip, saw blade, etc, not the tool.

E.g. If cutting with a multi tool and you don't use a carbide blade, of course the tool seems weak because you're not using the best type of blade!

Drop a carbide blade on a 12v Skil multi tool and it'll easily cut miles of wood easily whereas a steel blade won't.

...

Anyways, pro tools review, Amazon reviews, YouTube reviews, cpo outlet, discount tools direct.

After going through those sites in depth when looking for my power tools last year, I had the same question - what to buy for home use?

Obviously, lighter projects but I was willing to consider up to the 9/10 grade, even 10/10 tools with a good sale.

For the oscillating tool, one factor that made me perk up was vibration. I'd used tools that vibrated a lot before, never fun. So Skil and Milwaukee 18v fuel were two that did well in reviews, not too expensive, and did the rest fine (cutting, scraping, features, noise, etc).

While the brushless Milwaukee seemed like a good first pick, price hardly got below $100. Came across the Skil reading Pro Tools Review, a solid 8/10 tool, then saw the much lower price points. Figured I'd give Skil a try and discovered they make very nice tools for the casual home owner, with features not on other models (like ability to use batteries as phone power banks).

Skil Drill? Picked one up and it's nice. Both tools work great.

Without a sale and just daily ebay pricing of my tool + drill + 2 2.0 amp batteries + chargers $70 ish was pretty good, I thought.

This deal, even better!!

.

Now, oscillating multi tool and drill covers a ton the home owner typically needs, so do you need the impact drill, reciprocating saw, circular saw, etc? Not always. The multi tool alone can replace most for casual use, so while it's not a quick as a circular saw cutting wood, you don't necessarily need to buy a circular saw to cut.

...

Tool compatibility is more limited than the Ryobi system, so if you're the garage filled with tools type, that might be the better alternative to look at as a home owner with lighter needs. Discount tools direct often have many ryobi tools sales.

...

Anyway, this Skil kit is such a good price for a beginning set, and with cheap batteries on eBay, I personally would just pick it up today!

I haven't had the chance to use mine, yet. I read plenty of reviews prior to purchasing, and all of them were glowing. Several bordered on wildly enthusiastic.
Added edit: That includes some YouTube tester videos.

Yeah for me it would let me order online for 99. Shame I bought into Ryobi (stuff I don't even need lol). Maybe it would make a nice gift.

I finished my entire basement with this drill (picked it up alone for $30 from a SD post). No complaints. I'm picking this up just for the extra batteries, impact, and oscillating tool. Great deal!
