It's not a terrible deal if you missed out on the B2G1 free promo last week. Luckily, I already picked up a PHB, Monster Manual, and the new Fizbang's Dragon book last week during that deal.

On a side note, as someone who use to run a local game store, these Amazon prices are cheaper than what Mom-and-Pop stores pay when buying from a distributor. Sad, but true.

I find it hard to buy from Amazon when I could be supporting the local game shop. I saw some pricing on other items and indeed higher than Amazon.

Does anyone have any tips on getting started with a group of friends who are interested but also never played?

When I used to DM I would think about how the group assumed or had faith that I knew all the answers. So, confidence is key there. Sorry, not really helpful it been about 30 years since I used to have friends who'd play. Good luck

The best thing is that you are all interested. But, someone is going to have to step up and volunteer to DM for the group. That person needs to know the rules pretty well, and be willing to create the story, or at least run a module. The Essentials Kit, or the Starter Set are both great light intros into the game. Months worth of story in either of them, and everything you need is in one box. I was in the same position as you a couple years back, and that's how I got started. Good luck!

There is an Essentials kit that is a perfect way to get started. Comes with everything you need to run a game for the first time.

Forgot to directly reply. I'd grab the Essentials Kit as well. A great way to get your feet wet with trying the game.

I've found a couple of really helpful places on Reddit.
/DMAcademy
/DnDBehindTheScreen
/DnDHomebrew
There are more, others can chime in, too.
There are lots of great websites and tools, but don't be afraid to just simply start. You can always add tools or add features along the way.
Even if you realize you've been doing it wrong for the first few sessions, that's okay, the story keeps moving forward.
Also, as others mentioned, both the starter kit and essentials kit are great places to start.
Watch the first few minutes of a livestream of someone playing the start kit: Lost Mine of Phandelver. Once you're comfortable with the mechanics, start your group.

My brother told me that the best way to look at it is as a medium for telling a story. All involved should try to tell a story. I think it's a great approach.

My 6 year old daughter likes to turn through this book with me. She points at every single monster and asks the same question... "So, how does that one kill you?"

When Target runs their Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal, you can get 3 D&D books for about $50.

I purchased the Player's Handbook from a Local Game Store (LGS) this year and paid around $38 after discount for the book. They told me there's not a lot of markup on D&D books.

If you're interested in digital format, DND Beyond has all books for $20 each right now.

I made the switch to DDB a couple years ago and never looked back, especially since these days my groups all play online and I can use my subscription to share access to all the books with everyone that I play with and they don't have to spend a dime.
