8GB RAM not being upgradable is a deal breaker.
Good deal but this looks so dated next to the 16' that replaced this model.
Costco has that for $400 off. I think it's oos online but local stores may still have it. I got 1 for my son locally and he loves it. 17" at 2.8 lbs is pretty awesome.

I find the extra memory helpful when tabs go beserk, mainly facebook, gmail, voice, stocktwits... A 32gb module is pretty cheap and installing yourself costs nothing so might as well go big. I have found 16gb filling up with my usage where as 40gb does not. I dont notice any lag time so I am not sure what dual channel would do for me. Of course, like any upgrade, if you can get dual channel for not too much extra $$$, might as well.
See my post above. Of course 8+32 would be much better than 8+8. And memory is cheap. I did the same thing as you and I am happy with the results.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that 8+32 is 16GB dual channel + 24GB single channel. Way better than just 16GB dual channel.
And dual channel mostly helps with Ryzen and GPU. For Intel non gaming machine (like LG Gram) the performance difference between dual and singe is not dramatic, especially when the fist 16GB memory is still dual channel.

So, the statement that 16GB dual channel is better than 16GB dual channel+ 24GB single channel (8+32 sticks) for most users does not make sense.
Intel has some pseudo dual channel mode that works like that but it really isn't. And pretty certain it doesn't show in something like cpu-z as dual channel.

I messed around with an LG Gram a week ago at costco. I was reallly turned off by the keyboard flex, I know it's small and light and that can compromise build quality somewhat but it was to the point that I considered it hardly usable, especially for being a premium device.

Can you please elaborate on "works like that but really isn't"?
Are you saying the performance is the same as single channel for the first 16Gb in 8+32 config?
Or is it just slightly below dual channel, but way faster than single channel?
And has the impact been measured by someone? I am genuinely curious.

Played with my dad in laws version of this for 3 days that he got at Costco a few weeks ago with double the ram and storage, but everything else the same. My observations being a MBA M1 owner.

So crazy light. It would surprise me everytime I would pick it up. Super smooth and responsive with everything I did. No lag or stutter. Screen is actually really nice. Thought it being 1080p would be noticeable, but couldn't see any discernible pixels. Bright and colourful with almost no bezels. Can't believe the new MacBook Pros have that ugly notch when this screen with even thinner bezels has none.

Keyboard and trackpad are good, (not MacBook good, but more than good enough), plus it has a full size numeric pad.

No rigidity issues or flex that I could detect. This surprised me as I had heard some complaints. I picked it up with one hand often, and no flex. They made a really good choice going with magnesium.

Speakers are probably the only thing that were a bit disappointing. Very quiet and hollow even at max volume. Just use headphones and its not relevant.

To sum it up, this is a great laptop and gets my thumbs up for almost perfectly balancing value and portability with performance.

Is the RAM upgradeable?
I wish you luck with your memory upgrade. For my "old" Gram 17 i7 (typing on it now), it came with 8GB soldered on the motherboard, and it had an empty memory slot. So I added 32GB and now have 40GB. It also has a slot for a second M.2 slot for storage. I have seen that some people, with significant modification, use the M.2 slot for external GPU and video card. At the time I purchased my Gram 17, the Gram 15 had the exact same motherboard.

Unfortunately, my experience may not apply for an Office Depot / Office Max laptop. I ran their part number through a search engine and did not find definitive information about expansion. Again, best wishes and good luck.

Depending on which model he got from Costco, he might have the newer one which has a 2k screen. That one is currently $1099 on sale at Costco.

Got the same one from Costco for $750, only with 16GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD. Added a second SSD immediately (the RAM is soldered and not upgradeable) and installed Ubuntu on the second SSD and Win 10 Pro on the first one parallel to the Win 11 Home it came from. So I have a triple boot. Everything works flawlessly. The Thunderbolt outputs video via a USB-C to Display Port perfectly (tried only in Windows). Very high quality machine with a tight hinge so no wobble when typing. Light as a feather. Comes with a NON USB-C power supply which is fine by me. The i-5 CPU in it is more powerful than my Dell Precision M4800 i-7 from several years ago. The screen is 16:9 as opposed to 16:10 of the latest generation. I guess if you wait - the price will drop even further.
