if youre a collector, get this knife. if youre a user of tools, get the original non-coated blade. i own the coated and non-coated. it's night and day when it comes to cutting

Try carrying it in your pocket, you'll find dozens of uses for it once you get used to having it. I use my flipper to open packages and envelopes, pry things apart, cut loose threads in clothing, clean my fingernails, and on and on. That's just the everyday stuff. There's also the self defense element. It's just useful for most any human to have a sharp piece of strong steel on their person. It's the most basic and useful tool there is.

Kind of surprised the 940 is still so popular to be honest. I had one and was not a huge fan. The blade shape also strikes me as a bit out of proportion. And I have a lot of Benchmades.

I have been regularly carrying a Bugout 535 for a while now and it is fantastic. Deep carry, great blade profile, super light weight. S30V blade as well.

I've got a dozen high end knives, a bunch of ZTs, the 940-1, Bob Dozier, and lately CPK. My favorite is my Lone Wolf T2 because it's my first high end knife and I've used it so much out in the field processing game. I've had to stop going to bladeforum.com to put a stop to my addiction. But for everyday carry, it's the 940-1 hands down with the deep carry clip. I barely notice it's there. It's an overbuilt utility knife, but I've filleted fish with it and eaten steaks with it. But mostly I just use it to cut tags off and open boxes. You won't be disappointed, but you also would do fine 99% of the time with a cheapo $40 Gerber. But if the shit hits the fan, I can depend on the 940-1

Coated M4 blade is actually a good thing because M4 is not stainless steel. It can and will corrode / rust / patina if not carefully cared for, cleaned, and oiled, especially in humid environments like a sweaty pocket.

However, this is a Cerakote blade, which isn't as good as a DLC coated blade for wear and tear. It's better to have a coating on a M4 blade than not having a coating. You still need to take care of the cutting edge to prevent rusting.

Construction quality, lock mechanism, and blade material. This model is known to be a quality workhorse knife. People also buy Benchmade because it's made in the USA and they have a lifetime sharpening service if you don't like to or know how to sharpen blades yourself.

M4 is a great steel for edge retention and toughness, which means it'll cut for a long time before you need to sharpen it and that it won't chip or snap as easy as most other knife steel. M4 and CRU-WEAR are highly desired blade steels for people who needs a knife that can cut through tough objects without chipping. The downside is, M4 is not a stainless steel and can rust if not properly taken care of. It's also not that easy to sharpen.

A few things:
  • the r&d that goes in to the alloy used for the blade. M4 is an old school "super steel" that has a high wear resistance. WAY higher than the $40 pocket knife you reference so you can cut/slice many more times with it before it needs to be sharpened again. M4 is not considered a stainless alloy, due to it's very low amount of chromium, so the coating helps with corrosion resistance. As others have mentioned, the coating does put up a little resistance against material you may be cutting/slicing, but it reduces the maintenance of having to keep it squeaky clean all the time so it doesn't suffer from corrosion.
  • Benchmade is one of the premier commercial folding knife brands and they have a strong reputation for making high quality products here in the United States. Many people, including some of their fans think Benchmade is usually overpriced, and you rarely find deep discounts so when this model, which is one of their Classic models is on sale, it's definitely a Slick Deal.
  • Benchmade's "Axis" locking mechanism was patented at one time, and still is considered innovative, extremely safe, and more fun to work the knife in a flipping fashion than most other locking mechanisms. Many knife companies, ESPECIALLY the ones from china have copied it.
  • If you don't appreciate unique, creative design or a lot of the intangibles like the ones mentioned above, then get a Smith and Wesson in the bubble pack at the sporting goods store, throw it in your tool or tackle box and call it a day.

First responder price on benchmade's site for the basic model is like 185. I've been carrying the bugout cf model with s90 that I got used. Before that it was the the 3551 auto and 530.

Let me say this- a great pocket knife is worth the price you pay. I wish I would have saved the cash and got a nice BM before all the crappy kershaw, gerber, crkts....
