MS may be making some $ now, but as you indicated students today feel much comfortable in using Google. Google is free and teachers love it's flexibility and mobile integration. The only reason why MS is still in the picture is because Google does not care much about that space.
Many students get Office 365 free.

Cloud computing is the future, google was doing that 10 years before MS. MS was still selling CDs and they probably still would be doing that if not for the new CEO. And the MS Office Online was created only because of the pressure from google.
I get that it's online but anyone compared the free ms office online features to a standalone install? Barring of course the need to be online, what are some of the difference?

unless you are logged in with a google device. you have to remember, we are not talking about what is the best . . . we are talking about what is more likely to be used by kids ( the little people that grow to be adults and make corporate decisions on what software to buy for the organization )

Sure, kids can play with Google this and Google that. But as an adult, the entire business world runs on and is standardised on Microsoft Windows and Office.
Thus, running Microsoft Office and Onedrive on the phone to fully auto sync across to the computer, with 100% full document editing compatibility that Google can't guarantee or ensure.

So while the desktop Word has tons of features for footnotes and indexing, the online doesn't as one example.
But for the majority of daily life matters, I can easily format and edit using the free online and mobile phone versions, then push to the full version on a computer as needed for final formatting/editing.
Of course, that distinction is going away for corporate buyers of Windows 365. This allows you to log into a full pc desktop from any mobile device, even a phone, and use full Office anywhere anytime.
Of course, if they only released a full win11 phone, then no need for mobile this or online that when a full computer is in your pocket...

it's funny how you bring auto sync into the conversation without realizing that google came up with that first, MS just copied them.
as i said, the only reason why MS office is still alive is because google does not care much for that space. one thing for sure is that more students today know how to use google over Office, zoom and slack over teams, gmail over outlook and hotmail . . . . MS is packaging all their crap together because they know that individually most will suffer same outcome as skype and access. you can't show me a single features in word/excel/outlook that MS invented in the last 10 years, all what you think is their creation is stuff that they copied from others.

Fact is MS Office is the defacto office document tool in use today by businesses across the globe, so the real question is why use anything else?
Using Google is like America using the imperial system while the entire world is standardised on metric and Office... Just plain dumb for compatibility and efficiency, even if you can get things done....despite lost space probes...

And, Google doesn't even have a fully offline version of Docs, crippling its usefulness to the masses across the globe who don't have or want 24/7/365 constant connectivity.
Reduced attack surface = reduced chance of data theft and pc compromise.

Finally, ms actually cares to secure and certify. There enough data breaches and hackers out there for businesses to care.
Try to get a HIPPA validation for your Meet + Docs setup in a doctor's office is convoluted and difficult. And video calls, just not recommended even though Meet and Zoom have temporary covid allowances for use.
MS? You can get a fully validated setup that is HIPPA compliant easier.
