They both have their place. A fixed is preferred by many as more dependable, less maintenance, and stronger (if you have a full tang). A camping enthusiast needs this for batoning wood, for example. For every day carry, folders are simply easier to hide and have a more comfortable form factor.

I bought my brother the wood handle version of this several years ago - it's a beautiful knife. If you're able to spend a few $ more, it's more handsome than the black version.

What's the advantage of a fixed blade knife? I'm a newb, so I'd think a folding blade would always be more handy.

I don't know what kind of steel they use, but it's damn durable and really holds an edge. I have one of their pocket knives from the early 80's and it's hinge is still is tight and in excellent condition despite some abuse.

I think they have a proprietary method for hardening their 420 Stainless Steel. They are pretty bomb proof though they do need a good sharpening fairly often just as any of them do with good amount of use.

I have one of these and really love it. I bought it for field-dressing deer, but I found it too big for that purpose, unfortunately. Now I just use it around the house as more of a boning knife for breaking down poultry, pork, etc.

I wouldn't consider myself a "prepper" but I do believe in being prepared for survival in common situations. The problem is that you can't cut a virus, radioactive exposure, or toxic fumes with a bunch of knives and guns. I'm sure this is a great blade for cutting sapling for a campfire, but survival often requires mobility. How fast does one move carrying 20 guns and knives while running from a wave of fiery, toxic fumes?

Ordered one, although, since I do not camp/hunt/the like, have no need. It is a good value, and I like large, well-made knives. Thank you, OP, and repped.
