Bottom line, Premium does give you a little more detail, but you don't lose that much without it. I signed up for it anyway, since it's free for 6 months, but I probably won't renew after that based on what I'm seeing right now.

I've been very happy with the accuracy on my Charge5. My wife had the 3 before, and it was ok, but I feel like the 5 has improved operation over that one and is surprisingly accurate. The biggest thing for me was figuring out how tight it should be on your wrist (and where it should be on your wrist). I wore watches for decades, but stopped for the last 10 years or so because I didn't need it (smartphone was enough). I found that the wrist position doesn't matter as much, and I can have it rather loose... and it still works well. I started out having it "firm" but that wasn't reading things properly... I went tighter (which was annoying) and that didn't help matters either. I ended up using it on the loosest setting and it slides on my wrist fine (like my watch used to) and still works great. I haven't seen a spurious heart rate reading on my wrist yet. And I'm getting readings for everything (SpO2, sleep stats, etc).
I tried using a phone app to measure my sleep as well (nothing too fancy or crazy)... but it really didn't work well for me. Besides which, those can't measure heart rate and such anyway. The Charge5 does GREAT for measuring my data... and it's surprisingly accurate. It senses when I fell asleep and when I got up pretty much to-the-minute. I'm impressed.
Of course, YMMV... like you, I saw people saying that they can't get it to work for them. How you wear it matters (for all of these types of devices, not just fitbit), and probably even your biology (how visible is the heartrate on your skin, etc). I'm dark skinned, and it works great. My wife is of Irish descent, and it works well for her too.
Regarding the heartrate accuracy... I'm not a person who likes working out AT ALL. But my resting heartrate is like 58. I have checked what the device reads on occasion because I'd see a weird number (too low, for example) and it's been correct every time. I have checked manually a few times, but most times I use an app on my Galaxy S10 which measures heart rate, and the numbers match every time I've checked (maybe a total of 10 times or so).
Anything else I can answer, I'm happy to. I'd suggest getting it at Costco or similar, where you can return it if needed, but do be prepared to tinker a bit and see what works for you...
