Nice filter. Slim so it fits between the aquarium and wall better. Great suction. Nice pre-filter. Motor is in the water so better when there's a power outage. Only problem I have is it's so slim it limits how much you can modify the media. Definitely worth $10. Good for a 5 gallon or less.

I tried this filter recently, while it has some pros, the pump being in the tank has its drawbacks. I went back to an Aquaclear style filter that has the pump on the outside of the pump frame and out of the tank.

Is this better than the Tetra here? We have a 6 gallon tank.

Looking for an HOB filter a little larger for a 14 gallon Aqueon cube (reef tank), looks like this one is too small. Thanks!

Another cheap option:

That said, while little filters like this won't handle a high bioload, they can be useful for other uses on a larger aquarium. Such as putting plant cuttings in the media basket and letting pothos etc. grow straight out of the filter basket.

It tends to be quieter and if it fails it won't leak water onto the floor.

Yes! I have an AquaClear and when that fail it leaks all over my floor, good thing my floor is tiles and not wood. Also it is easier to maintain and much easier when you are cleaning.

I have the Seachem and those work well.

Loud!!!

Vibrates the entire tank, even if you put floss under the lip of the housing.

What a great idea! Is the media basket big enough for the roots, or will it turn into some huge root ball and clog everything up?

You can pull them out and trim the roots back as needed, I used a bunch of breeding baskets and leca media to build my hydroponics setup on back of my aquarium. I also have that aquarium chained to a sump with the 120 gallon next to it. I am not sure how much nitrates the plants eat, but I bet I have 50+ feet worth of vines attached to the "living wall" I built behind the aquarium. I figure this should also act as an air filter.
