And, regarding returning a couch after 5-years for peeling. Sure, I see no problem if you purchased a warranty. I've had a leather sectional we loved refunded after 2.5 years because the dye was coming off when we wiped it with a wet paper towel. Fortunately, I purchased a warranty on it, but unfortunately the couch was discontinued. Returning a couch to a warehouse store after warranty has expired seems dishonest to me.
To each their own I guess.
The reason prices are going up is inflation. If your reason was true, only Costco would have higher prices. In reality, they have probably more stable prices than anyone else because of their buying structure and agreements with their vendors.

We can all surmise where Costco's price increases have come from be it inflation or now, but prices have continually increased over the last 5+ years on normal products. It may have nothing to do with the excessive returns, but my thoughts are the "everyday" products are pulling in $ to compensate for the ridiculous returns.
I spend quite a bit every year at Costco, and have never returned any opened/used item there. I guess that's just me.

I think Macy's has started getting back to regular.
We have Sofa from Costco and Ashley we bought it at same time.
After 7 years we retired Costco and donate to a charity in a decent condition.
Where as Ashley sofa almost gone in 5 years.
We have dining table, sofa, recliners from Costco they are really good quality.
I believe you get lifetime warranty.
