I own a few different code readers including a generic ELM327 and the BlueDriver. If you just want to read a generic check engine code, save your money. However, the BlueDriver is not just an ELM327 with a coat of paint. It is constantly getting updated to support a lot of extra PIDs out of the box that you would need to add manually to Torque. It supports ABS codes (which the ELM327 clones--including the Veepeak--do not), and they have a very nice GUI (again, constantly updated) that includes the most frequent fixes for a particular code, a lot of extra information, etc., plus it usually talks to more of the modules in your car than a generic reader. I've scanned many cars that return zero codes with an ELM327 but where the BlueDriver finds codes.

Most of the people who bag on BlueDriver simply do not understand that it is more than a generic code reader. It will do more than an ELM327 and it will do less than a scan tool. That said, if you have a Ford, just get an ELM327 and add MS-CAN support to it with a toggle switch so that you can use FORScan. You get even more capabilities than the BlueDriver that way.

You can check compatibility and feature set with your vehicle here: https://us.bluedriver.com/pages/compatibility

I have a BlueDriver and love it. I love how if a code is thrown, it links you to the replacement part on Amazon

Why does this cost so much more than something like the $13 Veepeak Mini Bluetooth OBD2 Scanner? Am I missing something? The veepeak gives you the code, resets the code and also gives you real time engine performance data.

I bought this back in January. Paid full price ($100+) and I still think it was worth every penny. Great tool to read/clear codes. It can even monitor live engine performance. Good find!

Ya, I don't get what's so special about this one.

For code readers, there's no difference - though I believe some scanners only cover a certain range of year/make/models. Either way you plug it in, pair the OBD2 to your phone, and open up any third-party obd2 app.

With BlueDriver, I think you're mostly buying their device to use their app.

In for 1 for my 2003 Highlander.

I've been waiting this to go on sale for a few years. It's usually priced at $100 and sometime at $80. $70 is the lowest I've seen thus far.

If you're on the mkt for a scanner for less than $100, this might be the best option you got.

I think this does a ton of more things than the cheap scanners. It also talks to body modules, safety systems, and electronic systems that are not strictly engine or transmission only information.

I am a hobby mechanic and have used this scanner for a few years now. For a cheap Bluetooth device this is the best that I have found and years later I have no regrets picking one up. It connects to more modules than the cheaper alternatives that I have tried previously and always without issue. This is a great price.

I have this device. It works great. Gives good advice on how to fix the code. Tells whether a given fix is rare or common.

I have the BlueDriver and the ELM327 equivalent with Torque Pro. They both seem to have their pluses and minus depending on the vehicle.
Example, on my older Jeep I can NOT get the ELM327 to connect but the BD works great. I have a new tractor and the BD will not connect to it, but the ELM does.

Before I got one specific for my car series, I thought this one had the most bang for the buck considering all the features.

proprietary app, you are going to be at their mercy 4 ever. not worth the price or the future app upgrade problems.
