Isn't this normally $179?
Having used Roku, FireTV and Chromecast, Apple TV is far and away superior. It's the difference between an iPad and a Fire tablet. Sure, the fire tablet is nice for 1/5 the price, but it's slow, jittery, packed with junk, etc.

Personally I think the last gen 4k is the sweet spot except the touchpad remote is a little wonky for most.
Harsh critics! It's a good price if you need an Apple TV today. Also, the Costco backing with warranty and customer satisfaction are an extra plus.

This NOT normal price for the newest generation of Apple TV. The normal price is $179.99 [apple.com]

This hit front page when Costco had 2 for $300

I'm loving my Apple TV 4K 1st gen A1842 from Walmart for $80. Have not found a reason to want to spend more than that. Although Apple products generally cost more due to being a more refined, smooth and nice set up experience, I can't understand why they would charge more than 5x more than a Fire TV Stick w/WiFi 6. Personally the only reason I gravitated to it was for the iTunes extras that I just can't access through the Apple TV app on any other streaming device. I'm going to try Apple Arcade now that I have a free 6mo trial from Target.

No subscription is required unless you want TV+ to watch Foundation, Ted Lasso, Finch etc.
Apple Arcade is free for three months but you have to pay after.

I agree to an extent but it's not that much better than a Fire TV Stick 4K and it doesn't have the Dish Anywhere app which is huge since I'm able to use a family login. It's not worth 5x more, you basically get access to the same apps, and other than the extra features of the Apple TV app, I can't get all apps I want on Apple TV. I can see the comparison on the tablets, its the Apple App store compared to whatever Amazon has. I have 4 Fire TV sticks and they're no where near as bad as people make them seem regarding advertisements, sluggishness, etc. For $35 it's a steal of a deal, Apple TV makes sense at $80.

You forget about using Nvidia Shield with AI that enhances upscales images.

From a specification standpoint, it's a mixed bag here. The Shield TV Pro is using the latest NVIDIA Tegra X1+, but the Apple TV 4K (2021) does not use the latest Apple chipset. Instead, Apple opted for the A12 Bionic, which launched back in 2018 alongside the iPhone XS. That doesn't mean that the A12 is a slouch, it's just kind of surprising to see Apple using outdated internals for its latest streaming device.

Apple gains the edge when you look at onboard storage, as you can opt for either 32GB or 64GB. But that's it. As soon as the storage is filled up with games, apps, movies, or other content, you'll be relegated to deleting some things. Meanwhile, the Shield TV Pro sports just 16GB of onboard storage, but it can be expanded thanks to the dual USB 3.0 ports on the side. This means that you can use one of the best external drives for the Shield TV Pro and really beef up the storage. With this ability, you'll be able to use the Shield TV Pro as a Plex Media Server, which gives it another advantage over the Apple TV 4K if you have a massive library of content.

Has apple made any improvements to this device in the past 3-4 years? The one from 3-4 years ago already does atmos so I can't think of anything that has been added or enhanced?

Fair points. But for most people a Shield is too complicated. They want to plug in and stream in a friendly interface with good quality. Shield is for tinkerers; this is a mass-market product.
