Isn't this normally $179?
Having used Roku, FireTV and Chromecast, Apple TV is far and away superior. It's the difference between an iPad and a Fire tablet. Sure, the fire tablet is nice for 1/5 the price, but it's slow, jittery, packed with junk, etc.

Personally I think the last gen 4k is the sweet spot except the touchpad remote is a little wonky for most.
Harsh critics! It's a good price if you need an Apple TV today. Also, the Costco backing with warranty and customer satisfaction are an extra plus.

Got this because I was tired of my Nvidia Shield bugging out every now and then.

The positives: the Apple TV's UI, UX, and remote feel ages better than the Shield's for me. Not to mention the seamless ios integration that makes setup and searching for stuff a breeze with your phone. If I have to stream anything, I'm likely turning to the Apple TV. Also, being an Apple Music subscriber, the Apple Music experience on Apple TV is basically everything I wanted. Dolby Atmos-encoded tracks, being able to easily browse music on the tv, viewing timed lyrics, and controlling it from my iPhone are all nice features.

The negatives: the Apple TV isn't remotely as useful for Plex compared to my Nvidia Shield. It's basically unable to decode my Dolby Vision (without a disgusting green/purple hue) or Atmos movie soundtracks, as well as forcing transcoding on a bunch of audio formats I've tested that my Shield's been able to direct play fine: e.g. DTS and Dolby TrueHD. The Apple TV works fine for DV/Atmos content served through streaming platforms though, afaik.

All in all, still not sure if I want to return the Apple TV. Still deliberating, but it's a solid device unless you're looking to play back DV/Atmos content through Plex. I hear Infuse (3rd party app to access Plex) can solve all these problems, and might try a short subscription to see if it works for me.
I've used Infuse(Pro) on my MacBook and iPhone, all direct plays with HDR/DTS. I don't have anything with Dolby Atmos/Vision.

Hoping the Apple TV will work as well so I can stop jumping apps for different content.

Each device has its own benefits. I'd look more at the content you consume. Apple prioritizes the best streaming quality for their own services on their devices. Amazon does the same. The external apps like HBO and Netflix are pretty much a wash. Though I agree Fire TVs have much more ads, but ads aren't always bad. I've certainly discovered interesting streaming content through Amazon's ads.De
Depends on what everyone prioritizes.

I choose:
- more streamlined, clean UI, free of all and any ads
- customizable home screen with ability to group apps in folders
- multi-tasking - ability to jump from app to app or quit apps to clear memory/if needed
- more up to date apps - streaming services always provide the best apps to Apple TV
- easier navigation/scrubbing
- faster processor allowing for quicker RW/FF, zero lag from pause/unpause, zero lag exiting out of shows / browsing through content
- superior bluetooth connection and spatial audio with Airpods
- native Airplay (works better than any built in Airplay that comes with TVs)

Like I mentioned the only device that comes close is the NVidia Shield Pro and that is just as expensive if not more expensive.

If you stream an hour or less per week I could see why a $30 Firestick seems like the best option, but I have subscriptions to 6+ streaming services so it makes sense to pay $100 more for a much better experience.

At $150 this is a steal.

Me too. We were talking about it yesterday with my wife. We are always trying to watch the latest blockbusters. But Amazon sometimes can suggest some old comedy or maybe football game. The Autoplay ads and suggestions can be turned of. As you said, it's not bad. And once you are in the app like Netflix or Sling TV, the suggestions/ads are not longer in your sight. IDK why most people complain

It's $20 off MSRP, how is it a "steal". It's a good price, but certainly not a steal. Do you know even there is Fire TV Cube for power users? You are clearly in Apple's walled garden and blind. All the apps in most app stores are up to date. Multitasking is not important with streaming devices. It's not full blown OS like your laptop or a phone. "Superior this and superior that", give me a break. They are all using the same protocols and patents. Apple hasn't invented Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, why is it superior?

It's $29 off which isn't a bad discount but honestly $150 is probably what it should be regular price.

That said I don't think spending $150 compared to $30 is out of line if you like the experience better. This is something you'll probably use every day for at least two years, that's like $5 a month. People put up with way too much friction in their lives, do the little things that make your life more enjoyable.

Apple fan boys are the best. You are the reason I continue to hold my AAPL stock. They could sell this product for $499 and you would find a way to justify the superior picture quality you can't actually see. Keep on buying, I love it.

I had this for about five days, and will admit it is the best streamer I've used. I have had a Roku ultra and Nvidia shield, and firetv, and for every day streaming and user experience it's pretty much perfect……

HOWEVER! You cannot watch ripped movies off a Plex server or anything else with Dolby Atmos sound. Real dumb limitation they haven't fixed in almost a year. If they ever fix that, I will probably buy one again.

This. I am not saying $150 is too much or don't buy Apple products. I own two Apple TV 4Ks myself, but I also have two Fire TV 4k Max. We also own iPhones in our household including me. But I can't agree with someone claiming that Apple TV is superior to Roku/Android/Fire TV or its better value. If you like Apple TV and it's an ecosystem good for you. There are things I can't stand with Apple and things I hate about Fire TV. None of them are perfect.

Isn't there a third party viewer workaround?

Fanboy perspective for sure. My Fire TV Max disagrees with you. Before you say it, I do own two Apple TV 4Ks and two iPhone 13s in my household. Apple's TV market share also disagrees with your 99% number projection. What I don't understand is your fetish with UI speed and animations. None of them is relevant when you are watching Prime or Netflix. At least Apple could have added HDR10 Plus support since Prime has big catalog of movies and shows in this format. Apple is doing Apple things.

Apple will be happy to charge you another $200 when they announce a new and improved Apple 4K Max with AV1 support. The lack of AV1 support proves one more time that Apple only cares about profits.

BTW, if you care about power and want to use your streaming device for weather calculations/modeling and rocket science, there is Fire TV Cube 2nd Gen, which is very comparable to Nvidia Shield in terms of raw performance. And the cost is around $80 as of now. Again, being a fanboy and loyal to certain brands makes you blind. Good luck!
"Apple only cares about profits" - 99% of people who buy an Apple TV or any streaming device don't know what the hell hdr10 or av1 is. Nobody would buy a new Apple TV to get that functionality, nobody. I own this and two last gens and there's no reason to even buy this one. I just needed another and wanted the new remote, it was stupid to spend 50 extra bucks but o well. The last gen 4k is easily the best streaming device you can buy, unless you're obsessed with Plex servers and codecs. Also price to me is insignificant, if you're a cord cutter who streams everything, the daily cost is insignificant.

Thanks to Android manufacturers Apple is innovating. Otherwise, ignorant iOS fanboys would be still using 3.5" LCD screens with 3G in 2021.

Are you trying to say regular iPhone user know what Dolby Vision recoding is? I think consumers would have benefited more from AV1 ( Netflix already enabled it in some Fire TV devices ) and HDR10 Plus than Gimmicky Dolby Vision on iPhone with Profile 8, which Apple TV doesn't even support.

Well, they are rolling around in US Miltary armored vehicles. Courtesy of taxpayers.
