Get this if you can find one for $700/$800. It is still capable machine. Currently running Monterey on it. It runs fine with some other apps. You probably don't want things less than 512GB. Memory is good to have 16GB. I'd get this over M1 model since M1 can only do 1 x external monitor. That is a deal breaker for me. Not sure you care but I need a min of 2 x external monitors.

I'm pretty happy with them, to be honest. But curious which companies are on your list that have never "farked anyone" and are unanimously "fine and upstanding" ??
You do realize slickdeals has a word filter, right genius?

sorry didnt know we were in a "deal battle" i was just explaining that im fully aware that theres cheaper configurations of a macbook air m1 than $1240, i literally have one, the problem is if someone wants 16gb and 512ssd then you need to spend $1240 (unless you can magically transmute 512 ssd into 16gb of ram.. which is impossible)

now that i think about it as soon as my m1 saved me 7 hours of time in my salaried job it paid for itself--which should always be the goal. spending $100 for an additional 256gb ssd would mean nothing for my productivity as i work off the cloud and would have been a complete waste of my money. (the reason i paid out of pocket is my work 15" fully loaded macbook technically "works" but was overheating like crazy with google hangouts and design software at the same time)

so a huge productivity boost is the main reason i pull trigger on things, i dont like to spend my salary on bad investments. its making it hard to pull the trigger on a newer m1 with 16gb when i got such a high ROI on jumping to an m1 in the first place. ill save a measely 5 minutes per day by jumping to 16gb so thats a long time to start making returns on that investment and gives me pause.

My parents are asking for a new MacBook, they are using a 2012 MacBook Pro. They are pretty basic people. Just want to be able to video chat and play videos. Nothing heavy duty. With that in mind, this is a perfectly capable laptop right? Tech won't be too old for those things they want to do for years to come?
M1 MacBook is still cheaper. Can get one for 800-900 now on sale

Does this one have the fixed keyboard or no? I don't think it can be recommended at any price with the terrible keyboard it had from 2016 to 2019

It's pretty straightforward. I also build computers for people, you don't have to buy a windows key at all if you don't care about the background image. This only applies to windows 10 and beyond though.

Thus, free windows is cheaper than a 3-4 dollar key, that's my point
You're both wankers. It's not 3-4 dollars, and it's not just the background.
Yes, I use the unregistered version and deal with the pretty minor restrictions of being unregistered. No need to misrepresent the facts, you're not making money off this.
It's more in the $25 range, and it's more invasive than background screen - but not extremely invasive. Slickdeals is for deals, not tech advice... google it instead of reading fanboy posts.

This is a great deal for people who need bootcamp. No m1 can do that. Period.

Amazon has the M1 model for $150 more. There is no reason to not go that route.

Amazon M1 is only 8gb RAM at the price point you mentioned.

This i5 is a good deal to support multiple monitors or running Windows in Bootcamp or VMware. M1 only supports one external.
