Yep. I let my cover soak and was disgusted by what came out. Thought it was clean until I stuck it in a sonicator and even more broke free. I've q-tipped, toothpicked and brushed every reachable crook and cranie but ick is still stuck somewhere even with extensive cleaning every week. I switched to a Sigg, it has similar issues but the mechanisms can be completely disassembled and cleaned.
I've had a lot of them too. And you clearly have no idea what you're doing
Cleaning it properly isn't that hard with a toothpick or, as you so kindly stated, a q-tip. And do you not have a dish rack? Just dry it after it's done.
Lol it isn't some impossible task to rinse off dish-soap unless you've never washed a dish in your life
But they don't last forever. And they aren't worth much it's cheap plastic on the mechanism
If you don't love the Earl Grey color, Target has a few of these for $14...
I have 5 mugs like this. All travel mugs with any kind of mechanism, gathers gross stuff even if you clean it well.
Stick a qtip in the mouthpiece of your clean travel mug and see what I mean.
If you spend a ton of time cleaning it, then your next coffee tastes like soap no matter how well you rinse.
I've just gone to removing the top for drinking...which kinda defeates the purpose.

I to have several of these for different drinks. Coffee, water, Martini's. The lids spring open on the bottom and clean really well in the dishwasher. Never had an issue with gunk. Their customer service is excellent also. Had one break and they sent a replacement right away.

This Contigo should not be put in the dishwasher (after 2 washes the protective plasticy layer on mine started peeling off... wonder if I swallowed any unknowingly after the first wash). I figured it's some kind of metal, but it says hand-wash only, and I should have listened.
They say the lid can be put in the dishwasher, which is good, because the "easy clean lid" is a pain in the ass to get clean with all its narrow crevasses and geometry. Need something like a Q tip.

I just rinse the lid thoroughly with hot water after every use, and put the lid in the dishwasher at the end of every week. No issues.
I put lid in the dishwasher. Occasionally I put the top in a container with a denture enzyme tablet too, then rinse thoroughly. I use the denture cleaning tablets for thermos bottles and other containers that are hard to clean, and it works very well.

It's just the outer decorative film that comes off in the dishwasher. Once it fully comes off, it's just has a stainless steel look. In theory, the double walled insulation seal could break in the dishwasher I think, but I've been putting this travel mug for years in the dishwasher and haven't noticed a change in how it holds it's temperature.
Soak the lid in a 50/50 water and vinegar mix overnight then put it in the dishwasher. I've never had issues with the newer lids, but the old ones were a problem. I love Contigo products, and the customer service is fantastic. I've had good luck getting these at Kroger and Target on clearance for about $10.
