Full disclosure - I am certainly an Xbox fan. My kids play on PS4 and switch (we are a gaming family) - I have not seen or played a PS5. I see no need for that system yet - if I get a good deal i'll pick it up.
I own both a Series X and Series S xbox. I originally thought the same thing most of you probably are - why not spend the extra 200 hundred and get additional storage space as well as the ability to read disks (not to mention the upgraded performance). I got the Series X first and have had it for a year, love it - it's great. I barely ever do anything with disks now. I generally keep to the same types of games so that extra storage isn't a huge deal.
Then one day on youtube I was just looking around and saw a video about the series S. I was amazed at how small it was compared to the series X. A few months later I was in a walmart and they had probably 4 in stock - which was rare at that time - so as an impulse buy I got one. Took it home, set it up in our bedroom. Life is awesome.
I can say that I go back and forth between the Series S and X. I pretty much use the Series S more than the X as it's in the bedroom. Performance wise - I play Apex, CoD, RocketLeague and Minecraft. I see no differences in how the two play through those games. They load up the same, everything feels incredibly fast compared to a PS4 or an original Xbox One (or Xbox One S). It's great. The TV in our living room is 4K and I have the Series X hooked up to it - yeah... the graphics on that TV look a little better but honestly not enough for me as a casual gamer to care. I've hooked up the series S to that same TV and honestly to me it's hard to see the difference.. again, casual type gamer. What I care more about is the performance, and it really to me seems to be on par with the Series X.
They've mentioned storage as a limiting factor on the Series S. Yeah, on that 500GB drive you get about 360GB usable... which sucks for huge, big games that take advantage of the series S/X platform. But it's not as limiting of a factor as you would think. Get your two or three main games on there that you're going back and forth between. You can then use any external drive you have with 3.0 connectivity (which is most these days) to setup additional storage for original Xbox, Xbox 360, or even regular Xbox One games. The load just fine from there.
And within the last month they pushed the Beta out to Xbox consoles of their Game streaming service. I have 40 Mbps down internet in my house, and this service is going to be a game changer. I believe PS has something similar, but again I haven't used that so I can't compare the two. But from the xbox side - it's basically the "netflix" of gaming. With the gamepass subscription (10 bucks a month which includes xbox live, but there are constantly deals where you can get it significantly cheaper - i've done the 3 year deal twice now and on average am paying upfront but it averages out to about 4 bucks a month) you get access to download literally up to 100+ games - not shovelware but some pretty darn good games and all of the Microsoft exclusive ones such as Halo or Gears of War, currently Skyrim/Fallout are on there, etc. But back to the point here, this new feature they pushed out earlier this month allows you to stream them - you don't have to worry about storage size or waiting for it to download. Sure - online shooter games you wouldn't want to stream because there is some lag there i've seen - but any other games? It's amazing to me. I streamed Just Cause 4 first - I literally with my 40 Mbps connection on my Series S was playing that game within 1 minute - I played about 2 hours worth and had no issues. I then tried other games - I grew up with older games so I was streaming Fable 1 and 2 from the xbox 360, gears, halo, etc and each of them started up and I was playing the game within 30 seconds to 1 minute - all without having to worry about first downloading the game and waiting that 2-3 hours to do so. This is just in the Beta now, but for me... it's working incredible.
It's difficult to find the Series X right now but the Series S is readily available. Honestly, for the casual gamer, if you are a parent looking for a system for your kids - this is it. Get a Series S and get Xbox ultimate pass and you are getting a steal.
That's my opinion, hopefully this helps someone, but it's flipping awesome.
