Yeah, android TV on televisions are not powerful at all. I have 2 shields the OG and 2nd gen, both are great, never used them for gaming. But it will play anything I throw at it, HEVC x265 h265, no issues. If you're the patient type and are probably just going to use Netflix and hulu, your Android TV tv will probably suffice, albeit with a little bit of lag here and there. If you're going to stream files from your own personal server, are not patient with slow apps or slow loading OS, or just want an all around smoother experience, or want better sound from your surround sound or Dolby atmos setup, go with the shield tv

The shield tv line has been well known for its software updates years after the product has released. The AI upscaling can also be useful. Others like the ability to run a Plex server on it

Just ordered one. We needed one for the family room due to the roku ultra barely sputtering along (been using it for 6yrs now so it's time). I like the AI upscaling too.

I prefer open source software personally too. I don't support or believe in the concept of proprietary software like roku anymore especially if I have other options available. That's why I refuse to touch anything Apple.

In for my 3rd one. These are the best media box players, and I like being able to GameStream to whatever tv. Also with the GPU availability issues, it opens up GeForce Now options.

It also brings gigabit Ethernet where it seems even the best tvs are still 100mb.

Thanks, woke up and checked out my inbox and saw the deal, ordered just now. I have a 2018 Sheild and it won't play Dolby Vision on YouTube, so I ordered this upgrade as it will.
It's also slightly faster and supports Dolby Atmos sound. Don't think my old Denon 4310ci receiver does but I'll probably eventually upgrade to one that does.
My old Sheild the fan is noisy as well now and it seems hard to find the newer 3 screw fan for it.
looking forward to getting it and seeing how much better it is.

Still rocking mine. Will update if they released a SoC upgrade one in a near future, 2022/2023.

I have Roku Ultra and it can't play external (by usb) video files with certain audio and video codecs (Dolby atmos, DTS, DDP etc). It's very annoying. Does Shield do a better job? Thanks is advance.
