I bought 10k as a gift for someone. Is it okay if I keep them in my "gift box" for the next few years? Will it still accrue interest?

that's the type of thinking we had with real estate pre 2008.
Wait until you find out what they're doing with auto loans for the past 2 years.

This is a joke...

Interest rate GAURANTEED for 6 months and must keep money with us for 5 years to avoid all penalties. R U Kidding me.

The title of this thread is also misleading... it is as if you can keep your money for 6 months @7.12%... which is not true if you also pay a 3 month penalty. Am I missing something?

Not the same as the papier mark was not the global currency.

Never before has a paper currency been the global standard.
What about the British pound?

Totally agree about the title and some important missing info in the OP.

This is for people who have money sitting around they don't need. I'm using the same money I have to lock up periodically for bank bonuses. At the very least I'll get 300 and some change on 10k after a year. If the rate is competitive in the second six months, even better.

If I want to buy an extra $5,000 with 2020 tax return, do I need to do a card payment by the end of 2020 or can it be done at any time before I file my taxes?

I am getting both Bank Bonus and a 5% interest for next 12 months (got my iBond before the 7% adjustment which was 3%+) Not sure what people are complaining about.. the OP can't fit every single detail in the title

If the US gov't defaults on bonds that you lose maximum $10k/yr on it, you'll have WAY bigger things to worry about.

Is the US Treasury issuing physical EE bonds again because that would be awesome! Nothing cooler for a gift than having the actual paper EE's and putting them in away for 20 years. I was pretty bummed out when UST switched to electronic only - lame!
