Easy ... I've tried a few different types and haven't noticed anything. You think it's doing something because you are spitting out black stuff but the charcoal isn't really do anything worth-while.

OK so I've used 'charcoal' for tooth whitening in the past and it does work however I would caution it's use for anyone who has crowns. I hadn't used my charcoal whitening powder in some time and in that time I had some dental work done including a new crown. I didn't think anything of it when I used the charcoal powder again. The black can get under the edge of the crown and leave a black line around your tooth which gives the appearance of a rotten tooth. Sure enough I looked it up and other people had the same issue. The stuff doesn't come out easily. It took weeks of my regular brushing and water flossing routine to get it all cleared out.

So word of caution.
