Steps for ordering online:
1. Follow the link to add "Samsung - Galaxy S21 5G 128GB (Unlocked) - Phantom Gray" to your cart. Make sure you have select "$499.99 (Activate Today) Unlocked." It should say $499, but just wait a minute. Click "Add to Cart."
2. On the next screen, select T-Mobile (Starting at $399) and click "Continue."
3. I chose "Create a New Account."
4. Select "I want a new phone number" and enter billing ZIP.
5. Select a phone number area code and proceed.
6. I declined to trade in a phone, but you can give that a shot. I selected "Continue without trade-in."
7. Select a plan for your zip code. I was able to select the Essentials Unlimited 55+ for $45/month, even though I'm not that old.
8. Skip the Geek plan and go to cart.
9. You should see an Order Summary now. The phone should ring up as $399.99 + tax.
9. Choose pick-up or free shipping. I chose free shipping and it did arrive the next day with an unopened box and a T-Mobile SIM in the package.
10. Click Checkout.
11. Sign in to Best Buy for checkout.
12. Continue to Mobile Setup -- NOW YOU HAVE TO DO THE T-MOBILE CHECKOUT.
For a new account, this will result in a credit pull.
13. On the first checkout screen -- a Best Buy screen with the T-Mobile logo, too -- enter the information requested
14. BEFORE YOU CLICK CONTINUE, CREATE AN ACCOUNT PIN AND WRITE IT DOWN. THIS WILL HELP YOU WITH CANCELLATION.
15. Click continue.
16. In a screen or two, you should receive a T-Mobile invoice that includes (1) your account number and (2) your new phone number. TAKE A SCREENSHOT AND/OR WRITE THIS INFORMATION DOWN. IT WILL HELP YOU WITH CANCELLATION.
17. Finish checkout and wait for your phone to arrive. I recommend waiting for your phone to arrive to cancel, in case you have issues and need to return the unopened phone.
18. CANCELLING YOUR NEW PHONE LINE -- updated original post comments:
- Call 1-800-T-MOBILE.
- Enter your new phone number when prompted.
- Enter your PIN when prompted.
- Say "Cancel line" and confirm what the automated agent says.
- When you are told you have a two-hour wait, choose the option to have them call you back when you are first in line.
- If they asked whether you are returning a device to the store, SAY NO. There is no device associated with your new line/account.
- After I received the call back, the CSR made me wait an excessively long time for the cancellation to complete, and asked me questions about repurposing my line every once in a while. Probably a tactic; possibly a dumb process.
- You should have $0 balance due, since you paid outright for your phone and you never activated your line.

The response from the other thread is pasted below
I paid $0 to cancel a never-activated line. When you pick up the phone from bestbuy do not put that sim inside. Put any other sim in. When you call T-Mobile, if you never jotted down the never activated Ph #, you can use the SIM card it came with to look up the never activated account to be able to cancel . It's $0 cause the line was never activated and because you bought unlocked outright
1. Follow steps as mentioned in Wiki (if you get that error, its most likely a authentication error where TMO can't verify your credentials i.e. social w/ ID) you can try doing this in person at a BB store. I was getting this error despite checking everything 15x, finally tried doing it on the mobile BB site and it worked.
2. Do not insert your SIM into the phone. When you sign up online, as you are about to check out, you'll have to agree with the tmobile terms and conditions.. THIS IS WHERE YOUR PHONE NUMBER IS LISTED. WRITE IT DOWN OR SCREENSHOT.
3. Call 1 800 T MOBILE, tell CS agent that you wish to cancel the line (you can make up whatever excuse you want)
4. If they mention "are you returning a device to the store?" say NO. There is no device associated with your new line/account.
5. They'll cancel your account effective immediately.
6. The phone is FACTORY UNLOCKED, can be used with any compatible provider.
I was able to do this process for 2 phones. $400+tax for a FACTORY UNLOCKED S21 5G is a great deal imo.

- Received bill for full month at beginning of month (after cancelling without activation in Dec).
- Called about bill, CSR said to ignore it; adjusted, final bill would arrive later.
- Earlier this week I received a letter from T-Mobile to pay my overdue bill, which was the full amount for a month.
- Called the finance dept. phone number on the bill. Automated system said only had 5.xx due (for a single day of service). When I got to speak with a CSR, she was able to waive it. She sent a confirmation to my cell (which is actually a T-Mobile prepaid acct).
I just got a "PROTECT YOUR CREDIT RATING" bill in the mail, 1 letter each for the 2 accounts I created. Total balance due per bill $141.93. FWIW I had never received any sort of paperwork nor monthly bill after I canceled the lines back in December.
Off to go call TMO and raise a stink.
-edit, 32 minutes later it was finally cleared. Geesh.
The poor CSR was so confused.
She did confirm that the charges where valid.
I told her I canceled my accounts 3 days after opening.
She said it was actually canceled just a few days ago for non-payment. Uh...
She then reiterated how much I needed to pay today to get my account back to good standing.
Yeah, I had to break out my inner Chad a bit and be a little blunt with her that I wasn't going to pay anything to TMO.
Finally the light bulb turned on.
Lots of on holds and talking to her sup and 2 other departments she said the charges should be waived by 8pm tonight. (I guess they batch their account updates?)
Yeah, gonna be sure to call into TMO here in 24 hours to make sure both my accounts are @ $0.00 and my arse isn't being sent to collections.

-edit CSR was able to credit both accounts back to $0.00.
At BestBuy, during the purchase, a t-mobile account (incl. phone number) was generated and created (but phone box was not opened and SIM card was never put into the phone). I got a "T-Mobile Service Terms" that shows it is/was a postpaid plan, lists the t-mobile account# and phone#. I also got "BestBuy Activation Summary" that shows the t-mobile account#, phone#, imei# and sim card#.
The same day, when I got home I called t-mobile and cancelled the t-mobile account (a month later or so, I got a "final bill" from T-Mobile for $0).
I also purchased a pre-paid Mint plan which came with a Mint sim card which I put in the phone, activated and have been using ever since.
My question is what can the t-mobile sim card be used for (the one that was never used or put in the phone)?
Is the sim card# somehow tied to me or my phone?
If I at some point in the future decide to switch to some t-mobile plan (if so, possibly/probably a prepaid plan), can I use this sim card for that to avoid any potential fees for a new sim card (even though the original t-mobile plan that was activated with this sim card (and quickly cancelled) was a postpaid plan)?
Or, is the sim card basically useless/worthless and can be tossed/recycled?
