The limiting factor for us with full Ticket to Ride has been the length of the game. For now the kid isn't able to keep a good rate of play to keep the game within the allotted time for dinner. When a 15 minute game lasts 30 minutes during dinner, we don't really notice. However, our couple of forays into full TTR has dragged on beyond an hour.

Good luck!

No. 8 and 10 will enjoy the full game more. The Junior version is better suited for 4-7yo.

Like most of the junior/my first games, there is an additional element of luck introduced to simplify the strategic elements. The use of a die roll to gain resources can make or break the experience. On a 6, a player can move a ghost pirate to any resource node, which allows that player to block other players from obtaining the resource. On two games I played, the first player immediately rolled a 6 and moved the pirate to another player's starting resource, effectively blocking that player from progressing in the game for a few turns. Not surprisingly, the blocked player lost both times. There are ways to get rid of the ghost pirate, but not immediately at the start of the game.
Good to know the "jerk" move for the game. Even Ticket to Ride First Journey replicates that from the full Ticket to Ride, with a single train Albuquerque route that can be critical in three and four player games.

Dice are still a factor in the full version of Catan(?), but I think your suggestion here is that the role of ghost pirate to block players is a bit more outsize given the increased importance of route selection?

Good luck!

Just get the real thing...kids are smarter than you think, especially today
I certainly agree that if the goal is to introduce kids to the game (and not, as is my case, to also accommodate those introductions within the time limits of evening dinner) then many of these "8 years old and up" games are fine for even younger kids. Typically the drag will be around time taken evaluating decisions. One funny outcome my oldest experimented with at a certain age was intentionally tanking certain games (making suboptimal decisions on purpose) which we'd certainly discuss but I wouldn't discourage. It's all part of the learning process...

Following on from my comment above, I agree with most others that your 8 and 10 year old are probably not the target audience for this game unless you're trying to also fit the game into a proscribed amount of time. The challenge for them with traditional Catan would be that the play time might be too much for either you and/or them (the game is typically an hour, but different players/play styles can change that). However, the mechanics of the Junior version may in fact be too simplified to hold their interest even for its shorter 30 minute play time.

Good luck!

We own both the Jr and the "full" game. Our kids (10, 12, 14) probably enjoyed the Jr version up until about age 10, and I probably would be able to get them to even play it now for a quick/lighter alternative. However, as others have said, if your kids have experience with the "better" games out there (i.e., not just Sorry, Monopoly, etc.), and are older than 8 or so, they'll probably enjoy the "full" game more.

I do think the Jr version was a good introduction to the mechanics of the adult version, and we've had lots of fun with it in the past.
