Quite likely. Almost certain if you use a monopod or tripod to support it. I ended up getting an RX10 for that very reason.

The Sony version is relatively brand new. It is not the C, Contemporary version that you have linked for Canon and Nikon. It is the Sport version which is a level above the other two. That is why its more expensive.

Prior, Canon and Nikon Sport versions were nearly $2,000 themselves.

Really? I didn't know they cared. I only take pics of my kids at the zoo.

Anyone considering buying a long lens I recommend renting one from lens rental or some site. I rented a 200-500 Nikon for Yellowstone. Pretty cheap and very informative. That's a 5 lb lens and you get tired of lugging it on hikes. The Sigma is a little better at 4 lbs.

This is a good price, I definitely think the extra 100mm over the Tamron is worth it. I will point out that (at this point in time) third party lenses like this are capped at 15 fps on Sony bodies, so if you have already made the sizable investment in an a9/a1 then you probably do not want to hamper them with a 15 fps cap for sports and wildlife.

In addition, the Sony version is a "DN" model, meaning it's a new design specifically for mirrorless. However, for telephoto lenses, the reduced flange distance of mirrorless isn't very helpful.

Almost any private facility like a zoo, amusement park or mall requires a permit for 'commercial photography'. But since there's no way they can make out which photography is commercial and which isn't, they train security guards to watch out for 'serious equipment', i.e. tripods, monopods and large telephoto lenses.

Darn you spoiled my day. I was getting ready to compliment the wildlife photographers for not whining about the weight.

Good lighting, I have a metal pistol grip on mine. Like for use at an airshow, but it is heavy, and will get to you. Good lense, this is a good price.

Ya I was thinking the same thing. Do you know if this applies to the a7r iv as well?

I believe the a7R IV's max burst rate is 10, which is well within the 3rd party speed ceiling. I think that it's only on the a9/a9 II/a1 that this matters (for now).
