It's possible to use a spinning reel but doesn't work as well. With this casting rod you have smaller guides all the way up which make it easier for a casting reel to cast since it feeds line vertically. Spinning reels have larger loops coming off the spool horizontally that's why you will usually see a spinning rod starting guide that is large on bottom and gets smaller as they go up to the tip top. ... Also, the thumb trigger with this casting rod will get in your way when using as a spinning reel.

Another option: If you can find a Berkley CherryWood HD rods buy them.
They are on the cheaper end but have lasted me well over 2 years now, even with big carp. I have 3 of them in various sizes.
I broke an expensive Lews on a 5lb bass, will never buy a Lews again.
Bought a Penn Pursuit III combo for $40, and another Shimano casting combo for $50 at Dicks yesterday. Might post a thread when I get off. But they are doing an "extra 50% off lowest ticketed price" on clearance combos. Pretty sure this is YMMV though.
I received mine today! The shipping is super fast! The only problem is: the shipper creatively breaks the two-piece rod into 4, so that all the pieces will fit into the small shipping box. Bless his/her heart.

That's happened to me too… But this one arrived without issue!

When my niece and nephew break them I won't lose any sleep over it.
