I can get an unlimited online consumers reports subscription free through my local library when I use my library card number on my library's website. I would think many other libraries would offer this, also.
Careful. I subscribed to this in 2019 year. I used a fake name for the subscription and was i bombarded with junk mail. To this day I can't stop the junk mail. I've been using paperkarma, its helped but I got put on a bad list Frown
I often cross-reference CR with Wirecutter, but despite what Wirecutter states, they seem to more often than not regurgitate previous ratings and act like they're new.

To the poster earlier who said CR seems to have a political agenda. I believe they do.
They advocate for consumer protection laws, nursing home protections, transparency in healthcare billing, etc.

Think 'Unsafe at Any Speed'. Undoubtedly they backed Ralph Nader and I agree.

My local library only had the latest issue and the annual buying guide online.

Once I typed in my library card number, it sends you through a portal to consumers reports website and I have free access to the whole website guides and rating etc.

Consumer reports magazine is now useless without paying for the additional online access. As others have mentioned, that is available through most public libraries.

Hear hear. I could not agree more. I have been a subscriber since 1971. That will be ending come the June 2022 issue. There is so little content that is published in the Printed magazine, that it is not worth the effort of opening the magazine!!

I dunno why, but for the last 10 years or so I find Consumer Reports a most therapeutic thing to read while sitting on an aircraft. Haha I never read it anywhere else and never have subscribed, but somehow the $10 copy I buy at the airport gives me a good screen-free entertainment break on a long flight I guess. Have thought about subscribing so many times, but actually just finally got a local library card so will need to check that out! (In the past I have been able to find legitimately obtained legal scanned archival copies in PDF format on certain file sharing sites as well lol).

Don't know if I have gotten older and wiser but consumer reports seems to have a political agenda. I wrote the magazine editor about this and they basically stated too bad. I will never give them a dime of my money. Most content especially since the pandemic appears to be regurgitated articles. Yes I do the free library also.

Would it work on renewals or only new subscriptions?

Looks like coupon code GSHOP made my Cook's illustrated purchase to $16.95 for 2 years rather than $17.98. Not sure what the conditions were for this coupon code, but you can probably get a better deal with the coupon codes that Honey gets you.

I've been a subscriber since 1988 and I just canceled my subscription that was set to renew next month. The print magazine has become completely useless.

As you note, the print subscription doesn't even include online access, but I have that through my library. However, I increasingly find their ratings on things outdated or not really informed. Long gone are the days of CR steering you towards value priced goods that standout. Now they rave about $150 coffee makers and think they are doing me a favor. when I needed a new toaster oven recently their ratings didn't help me one bit.

FWIW, the last few years of my subscription were with an offer from discountmags that I got here on slickdeals; I was reasonably happy with discountmags. But I had CR set to auto-renew to lock in the price I had $16/yr). I really intended to cancel at the end of 2020, but I forgot and it renewed one last time.

BTW, if *your* library doesn't have access, search here at SD. There is a thread of links to other libraries who put the access link out in the open on their website.
E.g., fauquierlibrary.org
