OnePlus is a nightmare to deal with. Worst customer support I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Wasted countless hours dealing with support over literally 2 months, had to send my phone in twice and lost a $20 Dbrand skin in the process. Issue was never actually resolved, and they refused to replace the phone. They'll forever be on my shit list now.
Thanks to itxjustin for the steps to make the phone SIM-free (unlocked to use on other carriers).

1. Turned the phone on without sim
---- Connect to WIFI --
2. Went to Settings, Connections
3. Select Network Unlock
4. Select Permanent Unlock
5. Done
6. Update to Android 11
7. Check with a non-TMO SIM to see if you can make and receive calls.
I had this phone for almost a year and a half. It was great at first but now it gives a "not responding" message every so often. Also gets a lot hotter than it used to.... I bought it for $400 awhile ago so I'm not complaining. I love the hypercharge feature, every phone should have it.

I think it's still a good phone for $250 but just know there are issues with it.

It is weird, Mobile hotspot work on mobile data only. If I turn on hotspot, Wi-Fi is dropped, if I turn on Wi-Fi then hotspots turn off. Do you guy know how to fix it?
That's how hotspot works. There's nothing to "fix"

The hardware looks solid for the price, but is my data safe?

Nope, but last time I tried 5G on my iPhone 12 Mini, it topped out at 3 Mbps 😂

Tbh, I've never found a single use case where I wished I had 5G rather than normal LTE. It's a non-factor to me. But I also don't do irl livestreams or upload ProRes RAW footage in the terabytes to the cloud every day, so YMMV.

If you need a cheap 5G phone, I've seen the Motorola One 5G Ace going for around $210-$230, so that's an option. Has a bigger battery than the OP8 too, and its performance will be similar. Do note Motorola's update situation is as bad as OnePlus', so you lose either way when it comes to security/OS updates.
I've been told that all the carriers are switching to 5g and that support (and bandwidth) for 4g is rapidly decreasing.

LOL of course that's how it works. If you had a wifi signal around in the first place, why would you be hotspotting/repeating that same wifi signal again? Wifi hospot is designed to share the cellular data signal with nearby wifi devices.

This phone is a steal considering the hardware and ip68 rating.

However... the tmobile website has it rated 3.0/5 stars on 231 reviews. There are 88 5-star reviews and 86 1-star reviews, which is absurd. And this is probably why they're trying to get rid of it at this price.
The main complaints are regarding dropped calls, problems sending and receiving texts and connectivity issues.

Now that they're known in the industry they've shifted focus away from customer service... a shame because that's what they were known for during the start. That and value for money phones so both no longer hold true.

No. They are essentially the same phone with the 8 having 1 gen newer processor. I have a 6t and am not biting, but I have battery issues...and still not biting.

I don't think so unless they give you a lot for your trade-in. If they give you like $150-200for a trade-in then your final cost would only be $50-100 plus tax. It's up to you

This did not work for me. But putting my current T-Mobile sim in and was able to unlock with the same steps.

Tell me where I can get more value for the money in a new phone than a 249 dollar unlocked 8?

It's a good upgrade from a 6t. The 6t doesn't get anymore upgrades that why I got the 8

it has to be done before you ever put in a sim card. It worked for hundreds of people in the last month

Practically speaking, how much of an upgrade is this from the Pixel 3? (non-XL, Snapdragon 845)
P3 has awful battery life, inferior screen, less RAM, no 5G, etc

Yeah that's why I'm very tempted. I'm just not sold on OP from a software side moving forward. But for the 250 phone crowd, this is probably the best phone they will have ever owned.
