For folks interested in Iron Man, one of his best story arcs deals with Tony Stark's struggle with alcoholism, Demon In A Bottle. It is collected in Masterworks Vol. 13. On sale for $1.99,

I found these for $0.99 too:
Ghost Rider: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XVPR7S4?
Ant-Man: https://www.amazon.com/Marvel-Mas...8CRY5P7D/r
X-Men: https://www.amazon.com/X-Men-Mast...00AWR06DC/
Daredevil: https://www.amazon.com/Daredevil-...00AAJQYJ2/

Looks like most of the Marvel Vol. 1 issues are $0.99 now. Just search for "Marvel Masterworks" and "Vol.1" and you can browse or search for who you like and it is likely discounted.

Edit: These are some of the pre-comic code "horror" stories that Marvel did. Someone referred to them as "like the Twilight Zone" or "Creepshow made in the 50s". Really neat view of a bygone era that also highlights some of the up and coming talent that would lead to all the famous superheroes.

Note - I haven't read these, but have recently reread some odl batman comics from the same time period - and the writing is VERY different from the complex stories and characters we are now used to. SO just a buyer beware - if that applies to you, you might be dissapoointed. For me it was more nostalgia than enjoyment. Not TC, and the deal is great - so cheap I almost bought anyway, just a heads up.

From looking at what's available/on-sale on this page:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JGG4...sb_pc_tukn

Claremont's run would be the Uncanny X-Men Masterworks (volumes 1-12). It seems Volume 12 is the last collection they have released so far--although he continued to write into the 90's, IIRC.

It's more than just the #1's. Look around.

Here is Dr Strange #1-#9 for .99 to 1.99 https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Doctor..._sb_noss_2

Anyone know if these are appropriate for kids? (I saw the alcoholism comment about the later Iron Man comic of this era)

Some of the later ones have a ton of content (400+ pages, vs ~200-250 for the earlier volumes) as they include mini-series of the time; for example, Uncanny X-Men Masterworks Vol. 9 [amazon.com] includes the Claremont/Miller Wolverine Mini-Series as well as the standalone "God Loves, Man Kills" graphic novel.

OK, I have $20 to spend. What's the absolute creme of the crop for this sale in terms of great/complex stories? No preference for characters. Thanks!

Most of the comics you'll find in this sale should be pretty kid appropriate. During this era (roughly 60s-70s) kids and early teens were the primary audience. As this group aged, storylines for some characters got both more complex and mature. Though there's still plenty from the 80s-today that's very kid appropriate, it's less often a given.

Finally, Amazon offers a suggested reading age for comics in the product info if you want a recommended age group. Many of these are rated "preschool and up."

Marvel digital comics pro-tip: if you sign up for the $99 Unlimited Plus Annual plan you get a box with an exclusive comic and action figure. If you hold onto it for a year or two, you can usually sell the box for $99 or even more on ebay. I just sold my 2018 one for $117. Marvel Unlimited includes all these comics and more.

I also highly recommend the Fantagraphics series Love & Rockets, which is one of the greatest comic series ever made. It's rarely discounted, but Amazon/Comixology has it for sale right now: https://www.comixology.com/comiXo...2Fyb3VzZWw
