Smart tech is better if you REALLY need to know its leaking. Many of us live in homes that're large enough to where we cant hear everything, especially these if its going off if we're on the other side of the house. I couldn't when I had a leak.
Smart tech is more expensive of course but you can know its happening even if you're not home. There's also shut off valves that can be controlled remotely too so if you're far far away, no worries.
Just something to think about.
By the way, when I got this and it was flooded, water ironically ended up getting on the inside and destroying it so it's not very waterproof.
Govee has a number of home automation products that work independently, but have added features if you connect them to your network. These water detectors, for example, will sound a loud alarm if they detect water.
But if you link them to one of Govee's wireless gateways, and connect that gateway to your Wi-Fi network, then in addition to sounding an alarm, they will also send a message to your phone. So you will know there's a leak, even if you're on the top floor or otherwise away from home.
Recently there have been deals on Govee detector bundles, both with and without a gateway. This bundle does not include a gateway.
Highly recommend this product. I have 3 sensors with the gateway. Numerous times it alerted me via phone app that I had water leaks in my basement. I was able to react and control flooding before it became extensive and costly. Good for washing machine leaks, water heaters and natural elements
checking on ebay you can get the 3pk sensor and gateway for good deal. using the $5/sensor, subtract $15 (3 sensors) from the cost + shipping. 3 sensors and the gateway, where the gateway part is less then $20.

Can anyone shed some light on what a gateway or hub is and why it's needed with this product? Thanks.

Yes, they can, but you need the main control unit which is not part of this package. This is intended for additional units to an existing system I suspect.
