How do these compare to 400SE or 400i? I literally just bought mine on Amazon with a BT5R amp. I am incredibly happy already with this setup, but is this a deal I can't pass up?

Isn't this the same price this has been for months? I feel like we need a price drop if this qualifies as frontpage.

560V4 is much better than the 400i. You definitely shouldn't pass this up, IMO.

Not better across the board. If you plan to use the 400i primarily for action video games and/or heavy metal/rock music it might be a better choice. But that unfortunately would rely on the amp in a case by case basis.

...and yes, I speak from experience.

P.S. I swapped both with the 560-v3 headband because my 560s v1.5 had bad yolks. Swapped them both out because I like them.

A few years ago I heard planar headphones for the first time and was blown away. I know they were in the HE-400 series, but I'm not sure which one (not the 400i, which I don't believe had been released yet). From that point I'd watch planar headphone prices and try to talk myself into it, finally succeeding earlier this year when I picked up a pair of HE-560v4 and a FiiO K5 Pro to drive it. And...I didn't enjoy it nearly as much. The detail, clarity, and frequency response range are better, but I find the sound less pleasant and less fun. The clarity can be fantastic on a perfect recording, but more often it just reveals the imperfections. That said, the longer I've had them the more I've enjoyed them, so maybe my ears just weren't ready for them.

Meanwhile, I picked up a used pair of Monoprice planars for half the price. They don't have the same clarity or detail, but they make a lot more stuff pleasant and fun to listen to. Obviously, all of this is extremely subjective, and I have read plenty of reviews that come to the opposite conclusions--with something this personal you really have to experience it firsthand.

The amp you chose to drive the HE-560 is a bad choice. There is no way to sugarcoat it - you need a more powerful amp. This is part of the reason why my early assertion of the 400i might be a better a choice. It is easier to drive.

The K5 Pro puts out 1W at 33 ohms:

What do you suggest for a more powerful amp?

The classic Schiit stack can do it enough justice* The Magni ($99) has 2.4W at 32 ohm. Reuse a DAC and just buy the Magni (Heresy or +) or pair with the Mani. The entire stack is $199.98, which is only 50 bucks more than that K5 Pro.

*The 560s really shine though when they get fed power from balanced connectors. The Schitt Magnius ($199) does 5W @ 32 ohm in balanced mode.

Would the Denon S760H be a good amp pairing with these? I've never owned a pair of planar cans but have always been interested in trying some.

No, unfortunately. Most receivers have amplification for the headphone port as a bullet point in the marketing datasheet. They are not better than what you'd find on a standard computer motherboard or non-flagship phone. Under-powered.

Thanks. I was cross-shopping the stack and went with the FiiO when I found a cheap used copy. While I saw a couple of folks suggesting that you need more than a watt to drive the HE-560, I also saw a bunch of recommendations for the 250mw JDS Atom. IIRC, the average recommended power I saw was around 400mw, with some higher outliers, so I figured 1W should be plenty. What made up my mind was that I didn't see a single bad comment about 560+K5, and I saw more than one post saying that Magni+560 sounded bad in one way or another. Which was really the point I was trying to get across with my first post. I have no idea how your ears compare to mine, and no reason to trust your impression over dozens of contradictory ones I've read--nor does anyone have a reason to trust my impression over yours. Reading is no substitute for hearing, and I'd love to hear these headphones with the Magni--especially if I find it on sale at a place with easy returns.

All that said, you inspired me to brush up on my math. Hifiman puts this revision at 50ohms and 90db/mw. Audio Science Review measures and earlier, less-efficient version, at 43ohms and around 86db/mw. Since P=V^2/R and planar impedance is not a function of frequency (as demonstrated by ASR's measurements, and unlike with dynamic drivers), that means an honest 1mw (using Hifiman's numbers) or 2.5mw (using ASR's) should drive the HE-560 at 90db.

Using ASR's less-optimistic numbers for the HE-560, you would in fact need 2.5W to drive the HE-560 at 120db. But if the v4 is actually as efficient as Hifiman says, you would only need around 1w to hit 120db. I calculated for 120db because that's a number audio people often spec amps out to, but as I understand it that is a rough rubric to ensure that an amp's power can accommodate dynamic drivers' frequency-variable impedance. As we know, variable impedance is not a factor with planar headphones like the HE-560. 120db is loud enough to damage your hearing in minutes. I prefer to stay below 85db, which as we have seen should require less than 2mw on the HE-560.

(Update: just as I was posting this I saw that ASR also has a review of the 560v4, which finds its impedance to be reduced to 39ohms and efficiency improved from the earlier review, much closer to Hifiman's estimate at around 1.15w for 120db).

Personally, I almost never raise my gain above the lowest setting or the volume knob past noon on the K5 Pro--it just gets too loud. I have not noticed any indication of bass dropping off as volume increases, which one would expect from an underpowered amp driving dynamic headphones but, again, this is not a surprise for planar headphones. All of this to say, based on my amateur understanding of audio circuits and acknowledging that the ultimate experience of audio appreciation is subjective, I cannot think of an objective indication that the K5 Pro is insufficiently powered for the HE-560 v4. If you have information that suggests otherwise, I would genuinely love to see it--I am new to this hobby and always trying to learn.

Does a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 (3rd Gen) provide sufficient power for these headphones?

I have the 5se. And push it with the aaa 789 from drop. Cleanest amp I own thus far. I have heard that this can is very close to my 5se. If that's the caste, This price is a no brainer if you have a powerful clean amp to push (balanced).

Two things.... noise floor and power delivery. The more power the amp has, the less volume you need. Thus distortion reduction will be maximized.

When the 560 wants to generate the sub bass slam that differentiates it from other products in its class/price need the power delivery to be on-tap.

Think of it like a capacitor in car audio being used to keep the bass from dying out under heavy conditions.

The Schiit Amp can keep up, the K5 Pro can't.

You spent a lot of time on this only to miss the conclusion you'll need to hear it for yourself.

I wonder if you'll truly be curious or just defiantly trust what you read rather than try for yourself.
