Epic Games & Rockstar Games Launcher have Red Dead Redemption 2 (PC Digital Download) on sale for $9.79 when you follow the steps below.

Thanks to community member LocDenz for sharing this deal.

Instructions (If yo already own Red Dead Online, skip straight to steps 3 through 5 under the 'Next Steps' section):
  • First Steps:
    1. Login or register at EPIC Games Store and opt-in to receive email offers here
    2. A $10 Off $14.99 or More Holiday Coupon will be added to your account inventory (may take up to 24 hours)
    3. Buy Red Dead Online for $14.99 - $10 Coupon (automatically applied at checkout) = $4.99
      • Note: The $10 coupon is not limited to a single game purchase and can be used in one shot to buy multiple games at once by adding all desired $14.99+ titles to cart, then checking out in a single transaction.
  • Next Steps:
    1. Install and run Red Dead Online using Epic Games launcher (free download).
    2. The game will open using Rockstar Games Launcher (free download).
    3. On the in-game title screen, click 'Story' in the top-right corner.
    4. Click 'Buy Red Dead Redemption 2 Story Mode' at the bottom on the next screen.
    5. Purchase Story Mode via the in-game store for $4.80
    6. You will now own Online Mode through EPIC Games Store (launches using both EPIC Games Launcher and Rockstar Games Launcher) and Story Mode via Rockstar Games Launcher for $9.79 total.
    7. You will need to keep both versions installed (Online Mode installed/run via EPIC and Story Mode installed/run via Rockstar) if you want to have both modes without experiencing game crashes / errors. Otherwise, you may install/run either mode individually from within their respective launchers.
      • Total installation size of both modes combined will require ~240GB of free space (also note if your internet service provider has data caps on usage).

Helpful Installation Tips (see original installation steps as posted by communality member LocDenz here):
  1. Completely exit game (if running) and both launchers.
  2. Go to the game installation folder for Red Dead Redemption 2 from EPIC (default is typically C:\Program Files\Epic Games\, but may vary depending on your personal setup)
  3. Temporarily move the folder named RedDeadRedemption2 to a different location on your PC or a connected external drive (so you can install the Rockstar Games Launcher portion during the next step).
    • Optional: Go to Epic Games Launcher and Uninstall Red Dead Online. This step is just to unregister it from EPIC Launcher (your downloaded files will still be available).
  4. Open Rockstar Games Launcher and you will now be able to download the Story Mode portion of Red Dead Redemption 2 from within the Rockstar Launcher application.
    • If you uninstalled Online Mode from EPIC Games Launcher using the optional section under step 2 above, go back to EPIC Games Launcher and click Install on Red Dead Redemption 2 in your games Library. Let it download for roughly one or so minutes, then pause the download.
    • Go back and move the Red Dead Redemption 2 folder you moved earlier back to its original installation location where you moved it from (overwrite if prompted).
    • Go back into EPIC Games Launcher and resume the paused download for Red Dead Redemption 2 (it will verify the existing contents only, rather than needing to re-download it all over again).

UPDATE: You can actually accomplish full story mode wih only a single download (120GB total), and then move/copy files rather than re-download. The files are shared across ONLINE and story mode, so they simply need to be copied or moved using the instructions below. Credit to IanTH for original idea.

Caveat:
To play story mode only, *move* files from EPIC to ROCKSTAR
To play online and story mode, *copy* files from EPIC to ROCKSTAR

How to install full story mode with only 120GB
1) Follow steps 1-6 from wiki (Post #2) to purchase both online and story mode
2) Close Epic and Rockstar launchers
3) Copy (or move) the folder "C:\Program Files\Epic Games\RedDeadRedemption2" to "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\RedDeadRedemption2"
4) Rename the folder "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\RedDeadRedemption2" to "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2"
5) Delete the folder "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\RedDeadRedemption2\.egstore"
6) Start Rockstar Launcher
7) Select installation location as "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games"
8) Game files will be verified in 2-3 min, and game will be read to play
9) Enjoy Story mode, TOTAL DOWNLOAD ~120GB

Example of double DRM: buying an Ubisoft game on Steam, you'll need to have both Steam and Ubisoft Connect running to play your game.

Another example: buying RDR2 on Steam or Epic, you'll have to have Steam or Epic open AND Rockstar Launcher to play your game.

It's farking annoying.

For those who want to delete the Epic installation, but still be able to access Online mode.

- Go to the location where you installed RDR2 from Rockstar launcher.
- Right click on RDR2.exe and select Send to Desktop. It will create a shortcut on Desktop. Do this twice, we need 2 shortcuts.
- Re-name the first shortcut to "RDR2 - Story Mode" or whatever you like. Running from this shortcut will allow you to play Story Mode.
- Re-name the 2nd shortcut to "RDR2 - Online Mode" or what you like. Right-click on it and select Properties. In the Target field, go to the end of the line, hit Spacebar and then type -useEpic. Click Apply and then OK to close down the Properties. Check attached file if you are not sure. Running from this shortcut will allow you to play Online mode.

did the trick and got the online refunded but unable to start it on Rockstar even though shows I own them all now. Story works though so im ok. $5 for story. not bad. If anyoen know the fix for Error:FFFFFFFF Unknown Error FFFFFFFF please let me know
If you refunded RDO you can not play RDO. You do not own Ultimate Edition either, it's just a glitch in the RS launcher saying you own it.

But yes, you have story mode for 5 bucks

Are you serious? 250 GB just for story?
One time only. 120GB for RDO [in Epic], then another 120GB for Story upgrade within the Rockstar Laucher, then the original Epic 120GB can be deleted when all done. IF you only want Story Mode...if you want both that's where we'd need ~250GB, looks like.

My PC is setup that way now, working with the launcher only and Story Mode. I didn't need RDO.

This is correct, the only way you're getting Ultimate is to pay the $24+tax (if applicable), which is still a historic low.

Despite what the store says, the $4.80 version is NOT Ultimate.

Anyone else have an issue purchasing the Story Mode in-game and then having it not work? I verified on Babka and through Paypal but when I click on the Q-Story mode it still prompts to purchase. Some kind of glitch.

Not sure if anyone else posted this, but I was able to copy all the large Epic files (.rpf) and the x64 folder to a new Red Dead folder, then I installed Red Dead using the Rockstar launcher and pointed it to that directory. It verified the files were present and downloaded a few MBs. Seems to have launched okay and I didn't have to redownload.

Thanks OP! No need to move epic folder in step 3. Just rename it (I added ".backup" to the name) and continue with instructions as outlined. Then, when you are all done, just change the name back instead of dealing with step 4.

This is what I did also. I did not have to do 2 full downloads.

Does anyone know where I can find this purchase on the rockstar store? I cannot find the order history for this purchase... Just in case I want to refund. I'm talking about "Story Mode" through the launcher... not on epic.

It worked for me, thank you! RDR2 for $5.43 (with tax).

I bought RD Online on Epic, installed it, launched RDR2 through Epic and installed all of the files, bought story mode through the game, closed everything, and requested a refund and deleted the Epic folder. Just tested it a couple of times and it works with no problem.

Thank you, OP!

For those who have it on PS5. Is there a difference in quality for PC? I noticed it doesn't use RTX, but does make use of DLSS with nvidia cards.

For all that effort, id just pirate it. Less steps, and probably about equally legal-ish

That FFFFFFF error is for Online Mode. It thinks it exists for us but it really doesn't, regardless of what the Store says.

Definitely a bit janky and also that its Store still thinks I own Ultimate Edition. But for $5 it was still worth it.

There is no upgrade path to Ultimate from standard/standalone. Thus you can no longer purchase it. I would guess internally they flag it and the system keeps you being able to buy it this way. Some where there is a glitch that displays the flag, yet you don't really own it.

I do wonder, from a professional standpoint, what would happen if the folders from an Ultimate install wound up on one's PC.

Yeah, the whole refund for Online seems very sus. I was grateful for the upgrade. I owned the Rockstar direct version of Online that I had bought at the end of 2019 and it upgraded just fine. I posted a separate thread on the upgrade sale from Rockstar because any Red Dead Online owner ( I don't have the console version to check)can get the upgrade to Story Mode for $5, without all these hoops, yet the mods felt it belonged under this thread eventhough it's a separate thing. I'm sure people are missing the sale if if they glance at this $10 from Epic thread.
