If you want a passport only because of its ID powers, not travel...
Or, if you have an expired passport now, and don't plan on foreign travel until 5 or 6 years from now...
Instead of buying a full passport, buy a passport card and use it as a placeholder for up to the next 15 years, then if you need a full passport later, you can use the passport card to do a simple renew/upgrade rather than applying anew with full original doc requirements.
But if you need a full passport soon, buy a full poassport right now to save the $20.

Also, since you have to pay at post office when you apply though mail if you are mailing the application, you pay the current price of US passport application when you pay at the post office.

If you are in US with a student visa, you are not a US citizen and can not get the US passport. Passport is for the citizens of the country. Although I have a green card and live in US, I am not a US citizen. Threfore, I don't have US passport. Becoming US citizen requires a lot of paperwork, many years and a lot of money.
Even with online appointments, still a PITA.
Plus, ABSOLUTELY no way to say it's invalid like many of the improperly issued Real ID DMV licenses in CA.

(And one worries what nefarious uses the ones that sneaked by applying with only 1 valid id might have.... 9/11... There is that reason it's supposed to be a thoroughly vetted Real ID!)
