Been using my old LG Volts for Ring +, then Freedom Pop and Text now, Text now will end the free ride January. Oh well, the Volt was used since 2016. Samsung Galaxy 3 Tablet worked for FP then Text now til January.
Who said textnow will stop offering their free service? I can't find any info about that. I am a TextNow user with a sim and never been notified about cancelling their free service. TextNow premise is about being free and they have over 50 million Android users. If they stop free, they will lose tons of users. If they stop their free service, are they going to stop the advertisements?

Do you have a source (website) or did somebody just tell you that?

Honestly had NO CLUE TextNow had a sim that works for free. Definitely going to pick up one for older phone that is sim free but actually use sometimes with GV. I don't mind ads if they're just in the app and not all over my device.
I may give it a try also. For $5 seems to be in my price range. I was surprised by this also.

I currently have Ooma for home service and pay about $6 a month and would like to cut it if I can. Would I be able to port over the home number to TextNow? Or is there a similar free service? TIA

I haven't seen the referenced quote: but my guess is that it relates to TextNow's original version of the SIM/data free plan, that worked on the legacy Sprint network. Since T-Mobile is shutting that down early 2022, it makes since that TextNow would want to warn people about it.
TextNow now uses the T-Mobile network.

There is zero proof that I have seen around saying that textnow will cancel its free service plan with or without the sim card on January 2022. I have to see some proof for me in order for me believe it. I have the sim card and I know it runs on t-mobile coverage which runs well for me. I have NEVER received any notification or email from textnow saying the simcard will end on January 2022. Textnow can run successfully based on advertisements. This isn't like freedompop. I had freedompop in the past and have textnow now. Freedompop would hit me ridiculous top ups on my hotspot. The people who use textnow and its sim cards are more likely going to be light user so the data used to make calls/texts are so little that it is like nothing for t-mobile mvno. The heavy user is more likely in need in paying for its no advertisements and paying extra for data. T-mobile and t-mobile mvno are really awesome when it comes to their value. I don't believe it will change with textnow and their sim. I have been very impressed with textnow. I can understand why they have +50 million downloads in Google store. I have google voice too and I prefer textnow even with its advertisements which isn't a big deal to me.

Chat response from textnow :

Thanks for reaching out to TextNow,

At this moment, we have no intention of removing our Nationwide Talk & Text w/Ads plan, I hope that clarifies any concerns for you

Do you have a link to that news about text now? I can't find any.

So you have zero proof that textnow will end their free service on January 2022? No source or website that you want to share? Just an assumption from you because your old 2016 phone isn't or won't work.

Why will your 2016 phone stop working?

TextNow may update the required OS version number. I lost 2 Sprint locked LG Volts last yr for OLD Android. I had 2 more Sprint locked Volts purchased same yr that took their place and are still working with Android 4.4.2. Even google play restricts app access to to older version of android.

LG Volt is a Sprint (CDMA) phone. If the phone can be unlocked, he can use it with TracFone perfectly fine with either att, T-Mobile or verizon. Sprint unlock eligibility is based on 40 days of service. I am surprised that Sprint service still exists. According to T-Mobile in October 2021, they will retire Sprint LTE in June 2022. I can't see any mvno support Sprint service phones. T-Mobile needs to transition it out.
